The Big Takeover
The global economic crisis isn't about money - it's about power. How Wall Street insiders are using the bailout to stage a revolution

"It's over ? we're officially, royally fucked. no empire can survive being rendered a permanent laughingstock, which is what happened as of a few weeks ago, when the buffoons who have been running things in this country finally went one step too far.

It happened when Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner was forced to admit that he was once again going to have to stuff billions of taxpayer dollars into a dying insurance giant called AIG, itself a profound symbol of our national decline ? a corporation that got rich insuring the concrete and steel of American industry in the country's heyday, only to destroy itself chasing phantom fortunes at the Wall Street card tables, like a dissolute nobleman gambling away the family estate in the waning days of the British Empire."

People are pissed off about this financial crisis, and about this bailout, but they're not pissed off enough. The reality is that the worldwide economic meltdown and the bailout that followed were together a kind of revolution, a coup d'état. They cemented and formalized a political trend that has been snowballing for decades: the gradual takeover of the government by a small class of connected insiders, who used money to control elections, buy influence and systematically weaken financial regulations.

13 companies getting bailout money owe back taxes

WASHINGTON: At least 13 companies receiving billions of dollars in bailout money owe a total of more than $220 million in unpaid federal taxes, a key lawmaker said Thursday.

Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., chairman of a House subcommittee overseeing the federal bailout, said two companies owe more than $100 million apiece.

"This is shameful. It is a disgrace," said Lewis. "We are going to get to the bottom of what is going on here."

The House Ways and Means subcommittee on oversight discovered the unpaid taxes in a review of tax records from 23 companies receiving the most money, Lewis said as he opened a hearing on the issue.

The committee said it could not legally release the names of the companies owing taxes. It said one recipient of bailout money had almost $113 million in unpaid federal income taxes from 2005 and 2006. A second recipient owed almost $102 million dating to before 2004. Another was behind $1.1 million in federal income taxes and $223,000 in federal employment taxes.

Dude you know this is crap. I bet you have open tax years going back. I know I do. The amount is so small, you know it is open disputes. Don't read too much into some of this shit.

I love you, Mike, but Taibbi is not the most objective source when it comes to economic or political writing. Though he does write a wicked opinion piece.

So does that mean by 2050 the US will be a Communist Nation?

i think it will become...

With all the new Tea Party protests coming around the 15th, I think we will start to see Americans taking to the street to protest. The sad thing is that most of them are not willing to go all the way when dealing with this Government.

In short, it sure would be funny to see millions of laid off citizens stand up and refuse to pay their taxes....don't think the government would know what to do.

In the end, this government makes me sick with the shit they are pulling :321GFY

They are planning to privatize the school system anyawys. Just looks at what is happening in new orleans, every new school built is a private school pretty much.

They are privatizing everything that has the potential to bring in revenues while sucking in tax dollars with the bailouts and the fed... great

Yes the answer is to let the companies that could no survive, go. Let them go down the tubes. 3 more will pop up to take their places.

i don't understand how public schools and run of the mill social funding isn't a capitalist venture. you have that many more people capable of success, fueling the amount of money the economy brings in..

Guess how many "US" corporations are actually incorporated outside of US territory and as such pay no corporate income tax. Hint: one of them makes soft drinks and makes billions annually.
