Is shared hostgator hosting ideal for a TGP?

TGP's cant take up too many resources... so should I just get shared hosting?

Ill be looking at 2500 unique views a day

Hostgator wont let you 777 a specific directory in order to use a TGP script. I found this out the hard way. =(

Seriously?? I was calling the help desk, sending in trouble tickets and live chat and they all told me that Hostgator no longer allows any directories CHMOD to 777. They even had me talk to a supervisor who told me the same thing. What script are you using?

Im using jmbsoft's TGPX

I just checked, and the directories are 777

why the fuck wouldnt they allow that?

God damnit, I just paid them too. Like 30 seconds ago.

Maybe they didn't like me?

But i also know another webmaster that had the same problem so he switched host's. Man let me know if it's still working in a couple days, i have some TGP's im itching to put up.

Feel free to write your thought's about these hosts at my reviewsite, see sig :)

777 means anybody can read, write and execute.

on a shared environnement, it is a security issue, since scripts can be uploaded and executed in that directory ...

I just 777'd a directory in one of my accounts, worked fine.

Bo$$, I hope everything works out for you with your current host! They are a very good company so should be able to work with you. If for some reason, due to the specific issues mentioned here, you are forced to look at other hosting options, let me know and I will be happy to see if we can help you! Thanks and good luck!

Bo$$ you should not have any problem. i am even strea, ing from their shared host and they are pretty quick and good and 2500 should not be a problem for them. never had a problem with them. I am still trying to get to limit of what their shared host can handel. Also donīt worry about the 777 i just checked it and it works fine with me.

get a small Dedi

Get a small dedi and then you don't' have to worry about their rules.

I had a dedicated with hostgator a while back. It was a good machine but their support sucked. Every time I called they had to "escalate" the question to one of their higher level techs. Even for simple stuff. Bandwidth and pricing was pretty good. Not sure about their shared accounts. Didn't touch any of them.

brassmonkey 04-01-2009 02:02 AM

you get what u pay 4

AdultSoftwareSolutions 04-03-2009 10:04 AM

Upgrade to a dedicated with them. I had one with them before. It's your box. You can do whatever with it. 2500 uniques is nothing for a dedi.

If you have 777 directory on hostgator you will eventually get a 500 server error. It may work temporarily, but this will be result. The closest thing u can use instead of 777 on hostgator is 755. This worked for my YaBB forum and Album.Pl script.
