Think we can get all the hosting companies to take part in this?

SexualDragon 03-28-2009 07:55 AM

This is stupid. They expect us the little guy to conserver. What about the government? what about fixing the traffic lights so they are more efficient?

CIVMatt 03-28-2009 08:20 AM

Yeah I'm turning everything on and making blender drinks, fuck you hippies

MasterCore 03-28-2009 10:19 AM

You guys are so cool!

I just cannot wait to hear your responses when your children point their fingers at you and ask why you killed their world for them. When they ask why you couldn't even give up one hour of electricity to try and save it.

yeah really. most government buildings here have their lights on 24/7

DWB 03-28-2009 09:11 PM

A whole hour within an entire year?

Please. That is pathetic.

Why don't they turn off the lights every sunday between 2am - 6am? Or every night between 4am - 5am?

And hour is an insult. Like Earth Day. Why don't we have Earth Day once a week?

Because NOBODY really wants to make a sacrifice. That's why.

My house runs 100% on solar power. I recycle. I drive a hybrid fuel car. I'm doing my part EVERY FUCKING DAY. Fuck the rest of you and your "hour" devoted to planet earth.

Zorgman 03-28-2009 10:11 PM

Seems like it worked.

Damn straight buddy!

Rather than spit in your eye and everybody like you I turned on every light in the house, and left my car idling in the driveway, almost out of gas :/

CyberHustler 03-28-2009 10:39 PM

I was at the movie theater watching Monsters vs Aliens during earth hour. Sorry.

I know at least around here and many other places I have seen all of the traffic lights are now of the multiple LED style which by default would make them more efficient.

Who really gives a shit about the "what about the government". That is just up lame.
Also while I am at it, yes someone tries something small and perhaps silly. It will save some energy and who the fuck cares if it does or does not help the environment, one thing it will do is save you some fucking cash. That is part of the argument that I just find silly. Associate something with it being green or helping the environment seems to auto place it into the ridicule and do the opposite of type shit. Though most of the damn shit saves you money which improves your life - even if it does or does not help the earth.

Yes there are a few exceptions since the prices of a few things like solar systems are a bit high and do not pay for themselves as quickly or even at all yet for some. However many of the smaller ones (insulation, weather stripping, hot water heater blankets, whatever) save you cash.

Have you done research on "payback" periods for your solar system and the consumables in your car? I'm all for saving electricity but it's well known that solar panels (and probably your car's batteries) consume a lot of energy and raw materials when they're manufactured. Have you taken this negative offset into account when making your environmental decisions? ISTR some people say that a fuel efficient diesel car may actually be more environmentally friendly (OVERALL) than a Prius...

Where can I buy a solar system? Preferably ones that have planets that support life...

I forget which car it is exactly, but one of those hybrid cars has dangerous / hazardous batteries.

CaptainHowdy 03-29-2009 08:20 AM

1 hour per year?

It matters when the same hippies who are asking me to cut back are blocking all efforts for my state to build newer and clearer energy plants. The old plants are failing and have to work harder and as a result get less downtime for maintenance. If we can build newer ones and take the old ones offline it will do way more than everyone in my state turning their lights off for hour.

When the hippies are ready to be realistic about the problem then I'll be ready to support them. In the meantime they are hurting their cause and the poor people who always end up living by the shitty plants that pollute.

DWB 03-29-2009 10:56 AM

My lights are still off. I'm posting in the dark on batteries and stealing my neighbors wi-fi. Food in the fridge is ruined now. But I'm pitching in anyway.

You pussies turn your lights back on yet?

scuba steve 03-29-2009 03:53 PM

i just saw this for the first time, and realize i was at ultra music festival which was prolly canceling out the savings by using all the power that was "supposed" to be saved for that time period. so..prolly didn't really accomplish much

halfpint 03-29-2009 03:55 PM

Well they forgot to tell us over here in the UK ...bastards

Prius.

From what I've read... a 5 mile radius of the factory that creates the batteries for the Prius is basically a wasteland. Lots of chemicals and pretty bad stuff goes into those.

I don't know... do we poison 20 mi.² and build a crapload of batteries or do we poison the world with more exhaust? That argument can kind of support nuclear energy as well... which I do believe in.

I don't really have a problem with those batteries or those factories... they are what they are... I just don't think people can be pompous about using one without acknowledging that they too do contribute to the destruction of nature.

That's the problem with radical ideas. They aren't practical and they do a lot of harm.

A lot of the power plants throughout the country need to be replaced. Doing so is a totally different ballgame. I'm curious as to what the average age for a power plant is in the United States. I bet it's pretty old. Newer technology must be incredibly more efficient and more environmentally responsible than the old plants.

Agreed. I missed Earth hour but I will make up for it by leaving every light and appliance on for one week. That should cover it.
