Do you have a magic wand to make dictators play nice?

nation-x 03-30-2009 10:51 AM

No... I saw a report on it yesterday that said the payload has been confirmed as a commercial satellite. We have a policy of not shooting those down... the concern is the missile itself... but in reality we are stoned to think that these other countries (especially one with close ties to China) wouldn't develop long range missile capability.

Phoenix 03-30-2009 10:55 AM

they will shoot it down if it goes off course and near something it shouldnt

they have said as much so far.

michael.kickass 03-30-2009 11:43 AM

Yep, if it trespasses US air territory, they'll shoot it down!

Stephen 03-30-2009 12:16 PM

this is far too good of an opportunity to test our toys for us to ignore it :2 cents:

I wouldn't be surprised if that North Korean missle had a "malfunction" in flight :winkwink:

I watched the interview today, and the US admiral in the Pacific said that the US CAN'T shoot it down (even if they wanted).

Telegraphing weakness to an enemy on the brink of testing a ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead; what could possibly go wrong with a strategy like that? Gates: U.S. Not Prepared to Respond to North Korea Missile Launch.

The United States can do nothing to stop North Korea from breaking international law in the next 10 days by firing a missile that is unlikely to be shot down by the U.S. or its allies, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Sunday.

Appearing on “FOX News Sunday,” Gates said North Korea “probably will” fire the missile, prompting host Chris Wallace to ask: “And there’s nothing we can do about it?”

“No,” Gates answered, adding, “I would say we’re not prepared to do anything about it.”

Last week, Admiral Timothy Keating, commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific, said the U.S. is “fully prepared” to shoot down the missile. But Gates said such a response is unlikely.

“I think if we had an aberrant missile, one that was headed for Hawaii, that looked like it was headed for Hawaii or something like that, we might consider it,” Gates said. “But I don’t think we have any plans to do anything like that at this point.”

Japan recently mobilized its missile defense system -- an unprecedented step -- in response to the planned North Korean launch, Japanese officials said.

The move, noteworthy for a country with a pacifist constitution, is aimed at shooting down any debris from the launch that might fall into Japanese territory.

In a concurrent response, U.S. Navy ships capable of shooting down ballistic missiles are being moved to the Sea of Japan, a Navy spokesman said Thursday.

Gates said that the U.S. military could shoot down "an aberrant missile, one that was headed for Hawaii ... or something like that, we might consider it, but I don't think we have any plans to (do) anything like that at this point."

I think I can get it with my sling shot if it can make it out of North Korean air space.

I actually can't believe North Korea is grouped with the Muslims as being enemies of America, but I don't have all the facts.

I also can't believe they are so concerned over sending a Nuke skyward when they can't afford to feed their own people or buy toilet paper, but again I don't have all the facts.

well... its people like you that enable people like Kim Jong Il.. while the idiotic masses are protesting for world peace, guys like Kim Jong Il are busy toiling away developing nuclear weapons and threatening the planet and only care about one thing... nuclear blackmail with the constant threat of launch.

you "can't believe it" and that's exactly why these people keep rising up and threatening the world. Clinton was very close to bombing them in the 90's. the entire world has tried to help them and their only response is "fuck you, send us food and money or we'll consider it an act of war". the UN, US, China, Russia, Japan etc has tried to work with them for almost 2 decades to stop them from starting a nuclear weapons program, they've broken agreement after agreement and do absolutely nothing but threaten the world. before people start the BS about a missiles range... you might consider that one of this countries main sources of hard currency is weapons exports and they don't give a shit who gets them.

Isn't it a rocket rather than a missile if it is launching a satellite?

shhh.... leave him alone. he's too busy sending positive energy and good thoughts and magical butterflies and unicorns to Kim Jong Il to make the world a better place. obviously one of the worlds most brutal leaders, who's killed millions of his own people, trying to get a nuclear weapon WHILE threatening all his neighbors with war is no big deal. he just needs a hug and a kiss and a pony.

Dude, you need to stop eating so much Korean food. I live in California and love Korean people, but even they warn me against the food.

The question wasn't directed specifically at him, I think he is just parroting what he has heard on whatever news source he has. I just don't understand why ours are rockets and theirs are missiles.

Missiles have a guidance system, rockets do not.

But yeah if it doesnt have a warhead, its not really a true 'missile'

420 03-30-2009 06:52 PM

I heard the rocket says goldenpalace.com on it.

well aside from the fact kim jong is supposedly a looney bin that plan makes no sense.. all they get is aid, its not like they can ever compete on just aid alone. i dont think a long term strategy to prosperity is dump everything into weapons so you can blackmail people into feeding all the poor people created by making weapons.

I think the general plan in my opinion is , no country is taken seriously without nukes. Once you have nukes , all the other countries have an obligation to keep your country stable. So plan #1 is get nukes. they are a small country and even with great advances it would take a long time unless you completely exploit people, so plan #2 is exploit your people. Once the other countries with nukes find out you are making nukes they will stop you , so plan #3 is constantly overstate you nuclear ability/threat and open and close negotiations until your nukes are done.

Yes imagine 1 million soldiers poorly fed and under equiped swimming as a group to North America to threaten The United States. I mean, it just makes sense.

The Iraqi army some 375,000 strong couldn't hold out for more than a few weeks on home turf but somehow the magical Korean army can transport themselves vast distances across oceans and lay the smack down. Again more common sense.

Can I ask you a serious question? How old are you?

lol.. 1million starving, inadequately equipped N. Korean soldiers are no match for a well trained, well equipped US military of 2.3 million

Rochard 03-30-2009 11:45 PM

While everyone bitches about Iraq and Afghanistan and the amount of money we've spent.... I think you bitches need to look at Korea and how many troops and how much money we've spent there. Currently we have 37k US servicemen (and women) there; Multiply this by fifty fucking years.

North Korea has said if anyone shoots this down it will be an act of war. The US has said that this is a violation of some treaty or whatnot no matter what it is, and that we will shoot it down. Sweet. Let's finally get this party started.

Um..... Did you forget the forty thousand US troops stationed in Korea?

But seriously.... Most of the troops from North Korea would instantly change sides once they figure out that South Korea doesn't live off of government rice (which ironically is supplied by the US).
