Top English speaking countries in Europe?

Who can help me out here? Which European countries (outside of the UK) have the largest amount of English-speaking residents?

Thrawn$ 03-30-2009 01:23 PM

i would say germany first

Blazed 03-30-2009 01:30 PM

I would imagine Russia.

Thrawn$ 03-30-2009 01:38 PM

then i would add japan to

Platinumpimp 03-30-2009 01:43 PM

Definately the Scandinavian countries.

Danish people have excellent capabilities in learning or speaking this language.

I don't know but I will say that many Dutch speak English better than some native English speakers I know.

Twistys Tim 03-30-2009 02:01 PM

Ireland most certainly has the highest % of English speakers.

MaDalton 03-30-2009 02:02 PM

sweden, norway, denmark, netherlands, germany - not necessarily in this order

Every time i went to germany, i had such a hard time finding anyone that spoke english its not even funny. After 5 minutes of trying to communicate to a guy at a gas station that I had to take a piss, he tries to sell me hair shampoo. This was in the middle of berlin.

My vote is for Netherlands and Norway/Denmark/Sweden/etc

aniloscash 03-30-2009 05:03 PM

The Scandi countries and the Dutch are great. *although the dutch stress the wrong part of the word so they sound funny :)

I've never found many English speakers in Germany, but maybe they're like the French and just make out they cant understand you.

Spain, Italy, Portugal not very many.. those damn lazy latins.

Eastern/central Europe. wouldn't know.

kesha1 03-31-2009 01:29 AM

Holland (the Netherlands) for sure. Mostly southern part.

But actually we are don't.

As fas as I know of only 2 such countries: UK and Ireland. :2 cents:

The Duck 03-31-2009 04:22 AM

Germans are generally not good at English. Danes and Swedes are somewhat better then Finns nad Norwegians at english and Icelandics I cant comment on.

Nordicprofits 03-31-2009 04:52 AM

of course Russia since you ask for "largest amount of English-speaking residents" and not percentage of population...scandinavian countries are tiny populationwise

the real magoo 03-31-2009 05:04 AM

Scandinavians. Eastern European and Southern Europeans are the worst.
Except maybe for the younger citizens.

quantum-x 03-31-2009 05:30 AM

You're all wrong: Gibraltar.

CarlosTheGaucho 03-31-2009 06:28 AM

Scandinavia + Netherlands = #1

Germany - west much better than the east, but DON'T rely on everyone talking English, especially if you plan to go East

Central / Eastern Europe - you'll easily talk to someone in bigger cities, especially to younger people where there'll be a realistic chance they're more or less educated, but those, who're too lazy to absolve proper education most likely won't be able to speak shit anyway.

Worst = France and Italy.

You have a better chance talking to a dog than talking to most of the "average" residents there, and they will even get pissed you don't speak their language!

I wonder where do they hide all those great English speakers when I'm around!

I'm sure plenty of Pakistani speak great Queen's English too!

And I wonder how do those 10 mil. Polish immigrants speak abroad if there's only 9,2 mil. English speakers!
