One In Ten Americans Rely On Food Stamps

.. shit .... How many US GFY'ers does that make ?

Quote:

Washington, DC (AHN) - One in every 10 Americans-roughly about 32.2 million people-received food stamps according to the latest figures, the third time in five months that enrollment set a record.

Many attribute the rise in food stamp usage to the slumping economy and rising unemployment rate, with the average benefit from using food stamps at about $112.82 per person in January.

"A weakened economy means that many more individuals are turning to SNAP/Food Stamps," a spokesman for the Food Research and Action Center, an anti-hunger group, explained.

Food stamp enrollment rose in 46 of the 50 states during January as the national total rose by 580,000 people, or 1.3 percent, from December. According to the latest statistics, Vermont, Alaska and South Dakota had increases of more than 5 percent, while Texas had the largest enrollment, 2.984 million, followed by California at 2.545 million, and New York with 2.211 million.

Food stamp benefits get a temporary 13 percent increase under the economic stimulus law signed by President Barack Obama, equaling $80 a month for a household of four.
... must be Obama's fault .....:upsidedow

Nasty numbers.. and behind each number there's someone wishing they didn't have to rely on them. I feel sorry for them.

Wonder if we can find a way to take them as payment?

brassmonkey 04-04-2009 05:39 PM

dont use food stamps

Did I read that correct that a family of four only gets 80.00 a month and that is after Obama's 13% increase?

REALLY? Cause I am pretty damn sure 80 bucks is not the 13% raise.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but to me it sounded like the 13% increase means an EXTRA $80/month for a family of 4.

That's how I read it too.... and my jaw hit the floor... how the fuck can anybody survive on that???

I know groceries are way less expensive down in the States but even so, there's no way one person can survive off $20 of food, in one month.

Those numbers surprise me, as Obama's stimulas has cut food stamps for a number of people.

My brother in law lost his job when the company he worked for went bankrupt. He applied for and received unemployment, and food stamps. He receives a whopping $423 per week in unemployment, and $500 and change per month in food stamps.

When Obama increased unemployment by $25 per week, that put my brother in law $22 over the limit for food stamps.

Family of 4 getting $1792 in unemployment no longer qualifies for food stamps. Something just ain't right if you ask me.

After Shock Media 04-04-2009 06:48 PM

I got curious.

(Oct. 1, 2008 through Sept. 30, 2009)

People in Household Maximum Monthly Allotment
1 $ 176
2 $ 323
3 $ 463
4 $ 588
5 $ 698
6 $ 838
7 $ 926
8 $ 1,058
Each additional person... $ 132

Still a family of 4 on 588.00 (maximum) - did not check to see if its less in poor areas etc. Would be fucking rough.

(Oct. 1, 2008 through Sept. 30, 2009)

Household size
Gross monthly income (130 percent of poverty) /Net monthly income (100 percent of poverty)

1 1,127 / 867
2 1,517 / 1,167
3 1,907 / 1,467
4 2,297 / 1,767
5 2,687 / 2,067
6 3,077 / 2,367
7 3,467 / 2,667
8 3,857 / 2,967
Each additional member
+ 390 / + 300

The net guidelines seem a little weird and did not see unemployment income listed as a a reason to be in that category.

Have any content providers set up the ability to acquire content for food stamps yet?

Axzar 04-05-2009 12:02 AM

It used to piss me off watching the sistas in Atlanta roll up to the supermarket in their Cadillac Escalades with 5 LCD TV's, park illegally, walk in to the Kroger and pay with food stamps. Burns me up.

The title of this thread is a bit deceptive too,... not sure if that's the title of the article or not, but the use of the word "rely" seems a bit much... I'm sure there are some out there who use food stamps but don't -rely- on them..?

I come from the Land of Food Stamps.. WV.

No one in my particular family is on them... and I'm glad i got out...

But I could go home right now.. and I'd say 80% of a 200 home neighborhood is on foodstamps..

Places in Appalachia have ZERO structured middle class.. You have poverty stricken.. then a FEW coalmining jobs and a few service jobs (teacher, nurse)

The rest just pop out ginormous amounts of kids to pad their check..

I'd love to see the statistic if you factored out Appalachia or the South...

Maybe 6 houses down from my parents home.. there's trailer on a strip of land. The family had 12 kids. Strange men pull up to the house daily... the little girls get in the cars... and they always have pallets and bleach bottles out front.

So not only are these scum making money off of food stamps... but prostitution and drugs too.

It's disgusting..
A single wide trailer for 14 people... And not one "of age" person in the house has a job..

Actually, it is, on a few levels.

1. Obama and other "big government" officials are forcing socialism on our country. They have been at it for decades.

2. As they force out capital and chase away entrepreneurs, socialism and corruption breed more of the same.
