Passenger lands plane after pilot dies in flight

TAMPA, Fla. ? Doug White and his family had just enjoyed a smooth takeoff and were ascending through the clouds when the pilot guiding their twin-engine plane tilted his head back and made a guttural sound.

The retired jet pilot, Joe Cabuk, was unconscious. And though White had his pilot's license, he had never flown a plane as large as this.

"I need help. I need a King Air pilot to talk to. We're in trouble," he radioed.

Then he turned to his wife and two daughters, ages 16 and 18: "You all start praying hard." Behind him, his wife trembled. Sixteen-year-old Bailey cried. Eighteen-year-old Maggie threw up.

White, 56, landed the plane on his own about 30 minutes later, coaxed through the harrowing ordeal by air traffic controllers who described exactly how to bring the aircraft to safety. The pilot died, but White somehow managed.

White had logged about 150 hours recently flying a single-engine Cessna 172 but had no experience flying the faster, larger King Air. He declared an emergency to air traffic controllers ? White already knew how to use the radio. On Sunday afternoon, he got his first lesson landing the larger craft.

They were on their way home from Marco Island, where they'd traveled after his brother died from a heart attack the week before. White owns the King Air plane and leases it out through his company, Archibald, La.-based White Equipment Leasing LLC.

White got his pilot's license in 1990, but said 18 years had passed since he recently started flying again.

White had his wife try to remove the pilot from his seat ? afraid that he'd slump down and hit the controls.

But the space was too small. His wife couldn't remove him. They strapped him back in.

White knew they were supposed to stop at 10,000 feet altitude, but he watched as they continued their ascent, thousands of feet higher than they were supposed to be traveling.

Flying the Cessna, White said he's never gone higher than 7,000 feet.

White tried to stay calm and listen to the air traffic controllers as they relayed instructions.

"It was a focused fear," he said. "And I was in some kind of a zone that I can't explain."

One of the air traffic controllers called a friend in Connecticut certified in flying the King Air. He got out his flight checklists, manuals and cockpit layout sheets and issued instructions to the controller. The controller relayed the process to White thousands of feet above.

At one point, White said he tried putting the autopilot back on, but it steered the plane north, as the Cabuk had programmed in the flight's destination in Jackson, Miss.

Flying by hand, White navigated the plane through the descent and safely landed shortly after 2 p.m. in Fort Myers.

Fire trucks and EMTs were waiting on ground. White said they tried for about 30 minutes to revive Cabuk, the pilot. He didn't survive.

The medical examiner's office has not yet determined his cause of death.

A day after the ordeal, White said he could never have done it without the help of the air traffic controllers.

"Heartfelt thanks," he said. "They don't make near enough money, don't get near enough respect for what they do."

Wow crazy

MaDalton 04-13-2009 04:16 PM

bah - 7000 or 10000 feet, one engine or two, at least he already had experience in flying and probably knows how to use all the instruments. it would have been surprising if his wife had landed the plane.

NicAngel 04-13-2009 04:23 PM

yeah i bet she'll land his plane tonight!

Not really if you think about.

At first I was like "wow" but then when you read the article it turns out this guy is a pilot. Granted, the plane is a lot bigger, but the difference is like driving a car vs driving a truck. The concept is still the same.

Glad they all made it down safe.

So...is parallel parking a truck the same as landing a plane with your entire family in it??

Pleasurepays 04-13-2009 04:48 PM

breaking news.. a pilot landed a plane.

RyuLion 04-13-2009 04:51 PM

congratzzzzz!

Socks 04-13-2009 04:59 PM

someone on the news recently said that no civilian had every had to land a plane in documented history, it was just a movie thing. Not even sure if this passes as a civilian plane landing either... It's like halfway there.

D Ghost 04-13-2009 05:07 PM

wow that is really incredible

i would suggest that ground school... + 150 hrs of flight time doesn't constitute "civilian" in the sense they are trying to imply.

gmr324 04-13-2009 05:31 PM

Yea, until I heard the details myself, I was impressed. Then I realized this guy actually had flight hours and training.

Sam Granger 04-13-2009 08:05 PM

Pretty cool story :). Would of been amazing if it was a 747 or something similar, the King Air is pretty small!

Chit Chat 04-13-2009 08:18 PM

Amazing!

He doesn't need to parallel park anything.

He needs to land an airplane. He's a pilot. He's landed planes before. This plane is just bigger and requires more runway to land it. Not much different.

NicAngel 04-14-2009 12:14 PM

Well, when the precious cargo just so happens to be your entire family and a dead man sitting next to you theres a lot more going through your mind than remembering what you learned 18 years ago.

The difference is more like driving a car and driving a huge 18 wheeler on the ice roads. Or even just an 18 wheeler on normal roads, in both cases put the average driver behind the wheel and there is going to be some carnage.
