Oracle buys Sun for $7.4B!

http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=16598&tag=nl.e589

Oracle said Monday that it will buy Sun Microsystems for $9.50 a share in cash, or about $5.6 billion excluding debt, in a deal that plunges Larry Ellison & Co. into the hardware market. The company added that the acquisition of Java ?is the most important software Oracle has ever acquired.?

With the move- valued at $7.4 billion including Sun?s debt - Oracle also becomes a full-fledged hardware player.

got damn, the rumours were that IBM was the only one interested

Oracle announces MySQL will now be $50,000 per processor for web-exposed servers.

That seems fair.

Oracle buying into the Java platform? I'm curious what Larry's thinking with that.

Definitely something to watch as it unfolds. It would be nice to see a Oracle take a more aggressive approach on hardware pricing versus the old Sun but I can't imagine that happening as mainstream pricing and markets aren't Oracle's current focus.

Blimey, I know sun was/is expensive remember spending around $2.5M on a E15K woof! a few years back , but oracle pricing is legendary with hideously complex and very expensive licensing models, although I've got to admit, I do love Oracle as an RDBMS...

There is no way Oracle buying Sun will result in lower cost hardware. Have you ever tried to purchase anything from Oracle? hehehe.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they spin off or drop the hardware division entirely as it's not in Oracle's favour. And who runs Oracle on Solaris??

Too bad, I really like Sun hardware.

Who knows, perhaps they'll merge with Apple and conquer the universe. LOL
