PDGHOSTING: update on the down server

RE: Downtime on one of the virtual servers.

We had an outage on a main virtual server yesterday. This seems o be have caused by rogue usage of an account, mainly thru wild running cronjobs.
We had contacted the culprit , but before desactivating the account, we wanted to give him a chance to correct the situation. It never was.
Results is hat the OS was corrupted on the drive, resulting in the outage.

Since I have some family issues that I need to attend to, I instructed yesterday morningthe tech at the DC to:
- do a check of the disk and see if it can be ' repaired "
- otherwise re-install an OS, Cpanel and then restore sites from the backup drive.

That tech works for the DC. The box is own by me, in our rack.

I created a work order ( confirming I am ready to pay for this ) to that effect. I got no update of all yesterday ( aside that my BB got corrupted while rying to load ICQ on it ).
I contacted the tech/DC this morning since I saw that they closed the ticket/work order. The management informs me now that they do not do re-install of OS on boxes that do not belong to them ( colo .. )because of license issues. . The OS is Centos ( free - gnu licence ) .
This update is 30 hours later, even tough I bumped the ticket on reguilar basis.

The tech then says he sent this orning an email to pierre - @ -pdghosting.com ( server that is down !!! ) . In the ticket, I had provided an alternate mail pdghosting -@ - gmail.com. They did not read the ticket obviously, using the default address.

I am now going to the DC to re-install on an OS .

For those who have backups of their sites ( sites and DB ), I can setup your accounts on another box now.

My first goal is to to get sites backup and running. Once they are up, you will be able to migrate them to a provider of your choice.

I am sorry for this situation and am trying to resolve this asap.I am not on ICQ and haven't been on this forum either because of those personnal circumstances.

Data is all on the backup scsi drive ( as well as I kept the original main drive intact ).
The OS re-install is on a new drive, nothing erased.

If you have some B/U, I can set your account up on another box. just email at [email protected]

kisskatlyn 05-01-2009 12:38 PM

When was the last backup done?

Wouldn't be the end of the world but as long as i can get it back within a few days i'm happy :thumbsup

stickyfingerz 05-01-2009 03:19 PM

Sorry to hear you are having issues. Shit happens. Good luck in getting it all resolved.

Hi, I see that the servers are back up but the version of my sites that have been uploaded are REALLY old. When was the last backup done?

None of the work I did in the last several weeks is up. I am sympathetic to what happened but how can I stay with a host that doesn't appear to do backups regularly?

Awesome thread.

Every single one of you that enjoyed that much downtime deserves what you get for hosting with this idiot in the first place. Enjoy!

yah well you all speak up now in the aftermath but when I posted looking for a Canadian based host several people recommended DF and not one post otherwise.

I must not have seen the original post. Stay away from resellers who have no control over their own network in the future. :2 cents:

Dude, don't rely solely on your host for YOUR backups... Learn from this.
