I don't understand the swine flu scare. I mean, 36,000 people died last year from regular, seasonal flu and nobody panicked about it. This is a different strain of the flu but it's no more dangerous than the standard flu.

tranza 05-04-2009 09:04 AM

People are quite worried here in Brazil too...

master_design 05-04-2009 09:16 AM

My kid had the flu this weekend... He slept, drank lots of fluids, puked a few times... and today is all better. But that's how the flu normally works.. and no we didn't take him to the doctor.

baddog 05-04-2009 10:09 AM

What is so scary about it? A little over 200 people in the country have had it. What exactly is the big deal that makes this newsworthy?

Because they are pointing the finger at Mexico.

Still find it a bit strange that everytime the US says that someone from the US got it in Mexico they say only that. They Visited Mexico.

My favorite one was the girl in Florida that visited Mexico in March and got swine flu at the end of April.

Nothing like a 40 day incubation period.

Good way to keep some money in the country... Keep the idiots from spending it all at Carlos and Charlies.

And, hi Honez... I just noticed that you were in Denver. I just moved my office from Boulder to Denver (lodo) April 1.

But I'll be jumping out of this open window in a few minutes to keep away from the Swine flu.

Cheers,

J

Kiwigirl 05-04-2009 10:44 AM

Interesting - Guess I won't come visit you in Denver Hone. LOL

LOL! I will run right over with my safety net for ya ;)
We really need to get a Denver area webmaster happy hour thing set up. There are a few of us here.

I am not so scared about catching this flu and dieing from it as I am just getting the damned flu in general, especially a nastier strain of it.

That's the thing . . . there doesn't seem to be any indication that this is a "nastier" strain.

vending_machine 05-04-2009 11:17 AM

I'm heading to MX next Monday!! :thumbsup

Cause you are so smart. Do you know how I am dressing up my HonePot?

Tom_PM 05-04-2009 11:32 AM

Some local schools here are closing this week as well because 1 student had symptoms over the weekend. It's not even a confirmed case of anything yet. Guess they'll go in and wipe down the classrooms or something anyway.

jalami 05-04-2009 11:36 AM

World seasonal flu deaths, yearly average: 500,000
Confirmed 2009 Swine flu deaths as of this writing: 26

This seems more like a pandemic drill than anything else to me. Testing the quarantine response times, etc. Very weird.

Simple answer is - we know those strains of influenza and it is very stable. With this one it is new and we do not know it yet, nor if it will remain stable.
We also have vaccines for the normal seasonal flu, we do not for this flu.

PS - people did panic a year or two ago with the regular flu when there was a shortage of vaccine available.

I do think the news agencies are slightly over blowing it. The WHO has it all pretty clear cut, and the whole thing makes sense yet of course anytime there is anything that could be or get bad - people get all retarded, and even more retarded if nothing super bad happens. (aka prevention, precautions, quarantines, etc. work).

NicAngel 05-04-2009 02:46 PM

more people die each day from AIDS or cancer. worry about that.

Unrelated for the most part now isn't it, unless of course say you catch the flu and have a weakened immune system from Aids or your cancer treatment and say it kills you.

Maybe your right though and we should never concern ourselves with new strains of viruses.

And...

gmr324 05-04-2009 03:37 PM

so what's the media going to clamp onto and blow out of proportion once this H1n1 (or as I like to call it "Hinny") flu blows over?
