LAJay - Detrimental Networking Mistakes

Quote:

Jay Kopita, aka LAJay, from YNOT and Cybernet Expo stops by to impart some wisdom from his many years pressing the flesh. We've talked in the past about what you should do, and even why, when you are at an event meeting new people. Now we concentrate on what you should not do to create that lasting impression. Specifically: quantity vs quality in making contacts; how to know when deeper relationship building is warranted and potentially fruitful; in-person spamming; rookie and veteran mistakes; and the top 3 networking never-do's.

In the news we have a new contest to win passes to Cybernet Expo; possible HR hanky panky at Friend Finder; a light at the end of the tunnel of the tube site debacle; and our WTF: Oregon's new law makes facials and pulling out illegal.

Jay is one of the most solid people in the industry by far.

He should have gone a little further and talk more about connecting with your mark. I listened to the interview twice and he hit alot of key points about marketing and sales in general... He should have clarified his comments about getting to know people before you make a pitch. In all of my years of sales experience, this was the most important skill I have ever learned... if you open up a little and are transparent, most of your clients will come to you looking for a pitch... they will ASK you for a pitch. It happens to me all of the time because they want to have a relationship with me. It's how I separate the cream from the milk to be metaphorical.

Yep Pretty damn nice guy.

Kiwigirl 05-05-2009 11:28 AM

Jay has definitely given me some wonderful advice & shown me a few things in the past 7 years that I have known him. He is one of the most approachable guys in the biz and I am thankful to actually call him my friend! :)

Agree--and, he's smart, hard-working, considerate of others, and very sharp.

Gosh, it sounds like I think he's a nephew, or something!!!

Seriously, Jay ROCKS!!!! (So does Connor and all the YNOT folks!!).

JenniDahling 05-05-2009 04:01 PM

Very sound advice. LAJay is one of the hardest networkers in the industry and it shows.
