Ohio Christian school tells student to skip prom

Fri May 8, 12:05 pm ET
FINDLAY, Ohio ? A student at a fundamentalist Baptist school that forbids dancing, rock music, hand-holding and kissing will be suspended if he takes his girlfriend to her public high school prom, his principal said.

Despite the warning, 17-year-old Tyler Frost, who has never been to a dance before, said he plans to attend Findlay High School's prom Saturday.

Frost, a senior at Heritage Christian School in northwest Ohio, agreed to the school's rules when he signed a statement of cooperation at the beginning of the year, principal Tim England said.

The teen, who is scheduled to receive his diploma May 24, would be suspended from classes and receive an "incomplete" on remaining assignments, England said. Frost also would not be permitted to attend graduation but would get a diploma once he completes final exams. If Frost is involved with alcohol or sex at the prom, he will be expelled, England said.

Frost's stepfather Stephan Johnson said the school's rules should not apply outside the classroom.

"He deserves to wear that cap and gown," Johnson said.

Frost said he thought he had handled the situation properly. Findlay requires students from other schools attending the prom to get a signature from their principal, which Frost did.

"I expected a short lecture about making the right decisions and not doing something stupid," Frost said. "I thought I would get his signature and that would be the end."

England acknowledged signing the form but warned Frost there would be consequences if he attended the dance. England then took the issue to a school committee made up of church members, who decided to threaten Frost with suspension.

"In life, we constantly make decisions whether we are going to please self or please God. (Frost) chose one path, and the school committee chose the other," England said.

The handbook for the 84-student Christian school says rock music "is part of the counterculture which seeks to implant seeds of rebellion in young people's hearts and minds."

England said Frost's family should not be surprised by the school's position.

"For the parents to claim any injustice regarding this issue is at best forgetful and at worst disingenuous," he said. "It is our hope that the student and his parents will abide by the policies they have already agreed to."

The principal at Findlay High School, whose graduates include Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, said he respects, but does not agree with, Heritage Christian School's view of prom.

"I don't see (dancing and rock music) as immoral acts," Craig Kupferberg said

That's why Baptist's won't have sex standing up.

They're afraid someone will think they're dancing.

Well, he might as well learn now what happens when you enter into a contract.

then maybe they shouldnt send their kid to those types of schools lol

as has been proven many times in situations like this, your child can be suspended/reprimanded for off campus activity and its been that way for a very long time. Another exapmple is kid who held sign "Bongs For jesus" he was dealt with at school for out of school prank.

gotta love it, they send the kid to some very restrictive "FUNDAMENTALIST" christian sect/cult school then get mad about the rules? lol

the parents are at fault here, not only do you sign conduct aggreements, teachers and students alike are held to different standards at religious schols. I went to Catholic school for 9+ years, and it was like that back when i was young.

I don't feel sorry for the guy, that's what happens when you attend a fundamentalist Baptist school. He's been warned what will happen if he attends the prom, so if he attends and gets suspended then he has no one to blame but himself. Most importantly this shows how the power of pussy can corrupt anyone lol:winkwink:

The article says, "If Frost is involved with alcohol or sex at the prom, he will be expelled"

The kid can't drink or fuck.... but once the guy found out he might be dancing, he took that to the board who 'decided' to threaten him. It doesn't say he signed a contract that makes dancing in his public life, wrong.. or anything about that.

"England then took the issue to a school committee made up of church members, who decided to threaten Frost with suspension."

Sounds like we was within the rules, no drinking - no sex. But the guy took it to the board because it had dancing too "if it was in the rules, he wouldn't have had to take it the board" - after that, a threat was made.

This was total faith based, not rules in school based.

What I LOVE about this, is the kid already is saying fuck you to the church by going. And now the church doing this, just shows the kid the lies/control of religion.

What I LOVE about this is how you are blaming religion rather than the individual religious community. This is not about Baptists, this is about that particular sect.

Also, since you seem to have a copy of the statement of cooperation perhaps you can post a link to it here so we can all read it.

Fundamentalist Christians tell you not to attend the prom.
Fundamentalist Muslims tell you to kill the infidels.
I'll take crazy Jesus over Crazy Mustafah anytime...

Oh, I didn't know I said, "this is what happened."

It's about religion in general though. If it wasn't they all wouldn't want more money, they wouldn't want to view your taxes, some want to know about your jobs, they would lie to you and your kids, they wouldn't ignore facts to keep the faith going, some wouldn't check your family history, they wouldn't require you to go to the church to get your kids baptized, or married, or help...

To religion, it's only about that religion.

It doesn't sound like I attend a church too does it?

But I have, along with my parents and everyone I grew up with. And my parents left two churches because they didn't think my parents gave enough based on what they thought my parents made, and they wanted to see taxes to prove my parents 'cared.'.

I have heard the entire church, not boo, but go whoooooooo when someone passes up giving money. Baptists scare me...

And when my G-Father died, the church was quick to ask for a large donation from my G-Mother and followed up with my Uncle on why he had a marriage annulment, and kicked him out of the church, then asked for more money, from both.

Just the fact that I see porn, let alone work in porn - even if I went to church, the entire relationship, other than my parents/sister, is zero.. Even a hello, or notice of death, is gone.

baddog 05-09-2009 10:32 AM

Okay, so what church DID you attend that asked any of that? Pretty sure I am older and have a little more church going experience than you and I have NEVER heard of any of that ever happening at any Catholic church.

So, what were you? Scientologist?

John-ACWM 05-09-2009 10:49 AM
