Do all Skype paid accounts come with a real phone number?

You can pay for it for the year, or every 3 months I think.

Correct.

I had a skype phone, but killed it by dropping it too many times. Never replaced it, got in the habit of forwarding the account to my cell or my magicjack.

Waiting for Google Voice to become available to mainstream users.

That should turn everything on its head because GrandCentral had a sweet interface. Can't wait to see what Google does with it.

I use it however I will say it's not a perfect technology. I heard a lot of complaints about the phone itself so I made sure to buy the best one I could and for $200 I can honestly say it's the biggest POS I've have used as far as phones go. I think my biggest complaint is that at least once every other day I have to log out of it and reset the entire phone. This process takes about 3 minutes in all which isn't that big of a deal but still an annoyance nonetheless and that I have to do is so much is just beyond unacceptable. In all the phone is super cheap, so you can't beat the low monthly rates but it's just not a perfected technology yet.

Which one did you get? And where did you order it from?

Had a client about a year ago who bought one online (supposedly brand new). To make a long story short, it was defective. Told him to return it because all of the other ones that I had set up for other clients had worked flawlessly. He got the new one and hasn't had a problem since.

If you have a problem from the break or even in a relatively short period of time, return it. Use the warranty. That's what it's for.

Certain sectors in the tech industry have been utilizing manufacturers that do not build to spec or have consistent quality controls (the costs are lower). If they have above a certain number of returns or complaints, they just change to another manufacturer. Rinse and repeat.

I've got the Netgear, bought it a year and a half ago for around $150 I think (with a $25 or $35 skype credit too). It is *ok*, but the volume is kind of low and there's a more noticeable lag than there is with a headset on the computer. I find myself using the computer still for outgoing calls, but the wifi phone is nice for incoming calls because we use it as a home phone with the skypein number and it sits in the living room.

Yep i have and function pretty amazing

eroticsexxx 05-11-2009 05:29 AM

There are a few out there.

The one that gave problems was a Belkin, but the client replaced it and the replacement worked fine.

NyLoS 05-11-2009 05:32 AM

I used a Belkin twice.

First time to try it out, second time to give it a second chance...

Skype works better on my laptop

Broda 05-11-2009 07:51 AM

i have the philips voip841/b
wonderful phone
does both skype and ptn
alass, it's been taken out of production.. totally sucks since I was looking to pick up one more.. I tried to get some extra non-base phone sets for it but those were killed off a few months into production
I guess skype isn't all that anymore

candyflip 05-11-2009 09:29 AM

I use Skype wifi on my Cellphone from time to time.

For VOIP though, I use MagicJack and compared to Packet 8 or Vonage...it's great quality and much cheaper price.

Google Voice is pretty cool, but it's mostly a number forwarding/voice mail service. If you want to place a call using Google Voice, they dial out for you and then connect it to whatever phone you want.

markethustler 05-11-2009 09:43 AM

I have never needed skype, I just use my cell phone.

Which brings up a good point. You can now use skype on major phone platforms (iphone, blackberry, HTC) through the cell network's internet or WiFi.

That could account for why individual Skype phone manufacturers have been dropping the ball.

I use the magic jack. It gives me perfect sound quality and it paid itself off in its 1st call to Canada.:thumbsup

pornguy 05-11-2009 12:05 PM

I only use the computer to computer version and it works fine..
