Canadian denied entry into usa to attend trade show

Canadian denied entry to usa trade show
------------
A B.C. sales representative who markets equestrian products in Canada was barred from crossing the U.S. border to attend a trade show last month by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer who accused him of trying to steal American jobs.

Borsteinas said he was then fingerprinted and sent back into Canada. The border officer warned him if he tried to enter the U.S. on business again, he should expect to be prosecuted.

well there you go, tit for tat:Oh crap

vidvicious 05-12-2009 11:48 AM

Not the first and he surely won't be the last ...

I've been held, stopped and refused (over turned it) many times ... Depends whom you get! I got denied entry once becuase i was attending a workshop that i paid $5000 to attend! ... depends who you get it's basicly up to the individual Custom agent. if the guy don't like your mug for whatever reason, you're fucked.

GTS Mark 05-12-2009 12:06 PM

This is not new, it happens ALL the time...

Totally sucks...

_Richard_ 05-12-2009 12:06 PM

that's a shitty deal.. i hope making that news worthy works out for him, i suspect someone is heading for an interview the next time he crosses the border

StuartD 05-12-2009 12:31 PM

Yeah, this was actually posted back in March...
I was denied entry because I (my company) works online and therefore can work from anywhere, thus... they "proved" that I'm going there to steal jobs.

You Bastard..

That border shit is getting out of hand.

MetaMan 05-12-2009 12:48 PM

I have been in and out of the USA for the past 15 years minimum 20x, MINIMUM, and lasttime i was trying to go to DC for 5months, which i had just gone there maybe 6 monts before that trip and i was denied entry, the boarder agents in the USA are the worst on earth. i have talked to many american citizens who feel more pressured by their own boarder agents then travelling abroad. i am trying again at the end of the month so cross your fingers.

did either of you guys try again? i am bringing my buddy who i will be staying with in DC to the boarder so he can also talk to the agent. these fuckers better not let me cross again it is complete bullshit.

I was denied 3 times, and allowed 3 times in the last 2 years or so.
So yeah, I've definitely tried again.
But that first one was the one that made life hard from there on out.

I practically have to prove that I'm not going to work... and trust me, that's not as easy as you might think.

To prove you have work to do, you have tickets, contracts, contacts... to prove you're not... what do you have? Nothing.
I had my wife and 2 kids in the vehicle with me one time, they pulled us all in and had 4 agents searching my van at one time. We were held for hours. Were they really expecting to find proof that I was going to steal a job in the baby food?

happened to my dad yearrrrrrrrrrrsssssssss back he has been in the states for like 12 years now, but he drove like 8 hours to the boarder, had all his papers and everything and he was still denied. his new boss called the boarder patrol and reemed them out and he was allowed to cross. and this was after he drove all the way back home.

the lasttime they told me "i had no proof i would come back to canada" and wtf can you say to that, even though i have gone almost twice a year now for the longest time i can remember, the guy was just being a complete dick.

they finger printed me and sent me back, he said i wasnt denied entrance forever but it would b a tough time getting through and i should wait for my permanent residency which is about 6 months to a year away. but fuck that i am trying again, it totally depends on the boarder agent, 100% luck of the draw.

i like the fact that there are no border controls inside most european countries. sometimes you just notice by the changing language on the road signs that you are in another country

StuartD 05-12-2009 01:15 PM

The next time I try, and they call me in and start giving me the 3rd degree, I'm just going to ask "exactly what US jobs do you think there are that I could steal??"

Inside the Schengen Area in Europe there are border zones and they will often pull everyone over and check papers. Especially if you cross in the middle of the day. I had it happen to me last week in fact... :2 cents:

Elli 05-12-2009 02:07 PM

I've been denied entry once when I was trying to attend the LA show a few years back. They decided that I was stealing jobs and/or trying to work in the states. Since then I haven't had much trouble *knock on wood* but I always get stressed out until I'm through customs.

have heard many cases of bands having to cancel shows because they get turned back at the border.

Just tell them that you work in the Oil Business...Say your working on a deal and selling your Oil Field to an American Company ...I guarantee they will let you in ;)

The rule is and always has been that they are to protect the border against Canadians coming into steal jobs. After all once a Canadian is in they look and know more about US then most Americans.

I would assume its cause they are looking into the fishbowl and able to observe a lot more.

cykoe6 05-12-2009 04:16 PM

It is really crazy that they are wasting resources harassing people at the Canadian border while down south thousands of desperately poor people looking to work for almost nothing are streaming in on a daily basis. Big government at its most stupid.

Yep, I did an interview with Vancouver based Left Spine Down (former members of Front Line Assembly), they had a US tour lined up and were turned away at the border.

after my refusal i was able to travel to the us .. but got a yellow flag with instructions that i couldn't go across the border with Broadcast video equipment .. which was taken off a few years later by a really nice custom agent. ( for years I had to ship my gear ahead of me) .. about 4 years ago I got flagged again, this time it was when i was traveling to adult conventions with models .. I get stopped and questioned every time i cross with more then one female with me ... it's happened about half a dozen times since. But never when I'm alone or in a couple.

on the way home (canadian customs) I always get checked out with out exception ( at least 6 times in a row) Last Feb when returning from Jamaica I once more got a very nice agent, she explained to me that I could file a complaint sighting that i m being singled out because of my profession (supposely it says i'm a photographer) ... I did just that. and came back from my last trip without being pulled in. (btw I had a full lighting kit, two cameras and 2 tripods. I guess the complaint worked)

When American citizens return to the USA after working in other countries, it is important to honestly and accurately answer questions on the border.

When asked "what do you do for a living"?

Tell them proudly, "I steal jobs from foreigners and give them to myself and other Amercians".

iseeyou 05-13-2009 11:32 PM

or just say "I sell stolen jobs"

Depends on the country and where your cars from.. My Italian friend gets stopped every time he leaves Spain going into France. But I never get stopped *Spanish plates on the car*

Leaving Nederlands for Germany I usually get pulled over.. checking for drugs.
Belgium don't care.. they never even check when you come form the U.K and that's not part of shengen.

Very strange. I thought that Canada is like a backyard for the USA and there is no problem for the citizens of both countries to cross the border in both directions. Something like Russia<->Ukraine or so.

Now it seems I was soooooooo wrong.

P.S. Seriously the truth is: "As the 9/11 Commission reported in July 2004, all of the 9/11 terrorists arrived in the US from outside North America. They flew to major US airports. They entered the US with documents issued to them by the US government. No 9/11 terrorists came from Canada."
