Game Changing New Web Site that apparently has Google nervous

Hey Guys. I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before but last night http://www.wolframalpha.com launched. You have to check it out.

Watch the overview video. Absolutely amazing
http://www.wolframalpha.com/screenca...framalpha.html

If it's already been posted sorry this deserves a repost :)

Manowar 05-16-2009 07:19 AM

loading slow as hell for me

Sebastian Sands 05-16-2009 07:21 AM

Google is not scared or nervous about anything. They will just buy whatever they think could become big.

V_RocKs 05-16-2009 07:51 AM

That search engine doesn't do regular searches. It isn't like Yahoo or MSN and therefor poses no threat to anyone but itself.

Pete-KT 05-16-2009 07:54 AM

anytsite that takes over a minute to load shouldnt even be in alpha testing

What kind of drugs are you on to post that this bullshit is a threat to google?

I mean, come on man. Why post this shit?

»Rob Content« 05-16-2009 08:27 AM

Been waiting about 5 mins now for site to load.

Maybe they can become a threat when they get off a shared hosting account at webair...

I didn't say it was a threat. I said it has the google execs watching it and I imagine has them somewhat nervous. Have you watched the video? It's not a search engine. It's more of an answer engine. Something google can't compete with right now.

I'm surprised I'm the only one that thinks this is a very powerful new way to deliver information.

It would be powerful if I could get to the site.

Shap 05-16-2009 08:37 AM

Imagine students doing research. The amount of information this delivers in such a few short seconds is phenomenal.

Those of you knocking it. Did you watch the video displaying it's capabilities?

They launched last night. I guess they didn't expect the traffic they are at.

Pretty sweet to be at 2000 alexa on launch day.

Jman 05-16-2009 09:00 AM

XSV 05-16-2009 11:02 AM

why does my butt itch?

Wolfram|Alpha isn't sure what to do with your input

Though it does know why the sky is blue....

The sky's blue color is a result of the effect of Rayleigh scattering. Shorter-wavelength blue light is more strongly scattered in the earth's atmosphere than longer-wavelength red light; the human eye perceives the color blue when looking at the sky as a result.

HookUPcom 05-16-2009 11:10 AM

Looks cool.

seeandsee 05-16-2009 11:35 AM

stever 05-16-2009 11:37 AM

StuartD 05-16-2009 11:38 AM

It's running slow because of this:
http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/05/12/f...ine/index.html

It was supposed to launch on Monday but because CNN ran this story today, they launched early.

duff 05-16-2009 12:31 PM

It's almost like a living/thinking encyclopedia or calculator. Pretty impressive system.

The Duck 05-16-2009 12:33 PM

I have waited 9 hours now for the site to load.

sortie 05-16-2009 12:40 PM

It's wikipedia with AJAX.

chAos 05-16-2009 12:48 PM

mynameisjim 05-16-2009 12:59 PM

Wolfram is a serious company. Anyone involved in mathematics or science knows that company knows their shit.

yes, it appears to just be an evolution of wikipedia more than a google type competitor

Klen 05-16-2009 01:11 PM

they're not going anywhere with that name.

"excuse me, I need to Wolfram some info on that..."

kmanrox 05-16-2009 01:16 PM

seems like alot of what they do is already based on google's framework for example in google you can search for 1usd to thb and it will convert it, do calcs, convert weight etc on the fly... this looks to be a much more powerful build on google's stuff and i bet they either get bought out by google or by one of its competitors struggling to keep up.

PSSuperstars 05-16-2009 01:28 PM

Holy shit it does math problems for you.

GatorB 05-16-2009 01:34 PM

why would Google fear a website that takes 30 seconds to load ona 20 Mbps conenction. sorry typed in "anal porn" Google actually gives results. This site said it didn't know what to do with my query, took over 20 seconds to tell me that, then promoptly crashed my browser. Not impressed.

I posted why it's slow... it's a brand new site that's launched early due to a headline CNN news story. I really doubt they expected to get that much traffic that fast. No start up is prepared for that.

EscortBiz 05-16-2009 01:52 PM

google is very nervous whatever

google is here to stay and in 5 years from now there will be only google thats it

mynameisjim 05-16-2009 01:54 PM

Just so people understand, it's not a search engine so don't expect it to return porn results when you search for your site. It doesn't return results scraped from the internet. It's goal is to return answers.

For example if you type in "orbital speed of Earth" or "chemical formula for TNT" or "60 Mph to FPS" you get the actual answer.

Yes, it's a research tool... math, science, data.... it doesn't return websites like Google does.
They claim to be "complementary" to Google, not a replacement.

Ok it's not a REAL search engine so it's a threat to Google how?

You can hate them all you want for getting prime space in a CNN headline news article 2 days before they even launch, I'm sure you've handled it much better the times it's happened to you.

Between building the best product they can and putting those resources towards infrastructure in the slim narrow chance that CNN might make them a headline.. I think they probably focused on the product.

It's like F-n Wikipedia, only difference is they "Artificial intelligence" cover it up, like some super tool, with flash design.

First they are threat to Wikipedia then to Google. But right now they are not a treat to anything.

Google will not go the answer machine route. There's a lot less money to make there, if anything.

Yeaj :Oh crap
