Just Quit My Day Job!!! (after 15 years)

So I finally quit my day job!

15 years ago I started a design company called ThinkMango.com. It's morphed, grown, shrunk, changed form, and grown again...

4 years ago, I started HookUP as a side project and began growing that... Over the past 3 years, I made a conscious effort to replace myself out of everything that I did at Mango, brought on 2 partners, and kept moving more and more of my time to HookUP.com, but still running 2 companies.

Yesterday was it... I sold out my shares (took a note payable) and signed all of the paperwork to my partners leaving 100% of my time devoted to HookUP.

15 years is a long time!
Walking away and not having to think about the day to day operations of a company that's been my baby for 15 years is huge!

Thought I'd share.

Cheers,

J. :321GFY

Waking up not having to think about payroll, employee issues, etc. was pretty sweet.

bronco67 05-20-2009 03:48 PM

Congrats!

As someone who jumped off the treadmill almost 3 years ago, I can tell you its scary at first -- but I wouldn't trade it for anything. If I'm going to work for an asshole, it might as well be me.

st0ned 05-20-2009 03:49 PM

Congratulations. I still remember the day I quit the best job I had ever had to work for myself. Truly an amazing and rewarding experience.

Well there is no question that the service business is very difficult. Building websites, design, marketing, etc. for clients... trying to make them happy is very difficult.

Get rich quick this has not been... HookUP has been a growing learning experience... But marketing a product seems to be a better biz model.

Now... How to make affiliates happy?

Anyone know? :winkwink:

Yeah, I've always been the asshole... Started Mango when I was 23. And I'd guess that I'm pretty much unemployable at this point... But so are my partners on HookUP. :1orglaugh

Sosa 05-20-2009 04:37 PM

Congrats, hope it works out!

Good for you!!!

It's not easy to let go of your baby, but at some point you have to do it, and move on to the next point in your life.

It is better to do one thing right than to do several things half-assed.

I know how hard it is, and I wish you all the best... :thumbsup

Good luck,

ADG

It really is difficult to run more than 1 company... When you run 1 you have to do what ever it takes... When you have 2 it's easier to procrastinate on the things you don't like and spend the time where you are passionate. - That being said, I'm always looking for new ideas. ;)
