How old is too old to become a cop?

My brother is turning 35 in June and he is thinking he can become a cop. I say bullshit, nobody wants his 35 Y.O. ass chasing teenager and 20 something year old criminals. Your thoughts on the subject?

Supz 05-25-2009 10:07 AM

Any age,

Most cities of a max age for application. Around here it is 36. Just tell him to call and find out.

brassmonkey 05-25-2009 10:10 AM

depends on if hes in shape

AssPirate 05-25-2009 10:11 AM

I think you're too old to apply as a cop when you have to poop on diapers during the day.

candyflip 05-25-2009 10:11 AM

My buddy is a cop and still keeps trying to get me to submit an application. They've got a big push for more cops on the street here, so I'm sure they'll consider anyone who's able bodied.

Lycanthrope 05-25-2009 10:12 AM

I know people 40+ (no, not webmasters), that have more game, can out run, out skate, and out right beat the shit out of their younger counter parts. If you want a number, I would say 42-45 is about last call to start a career in law enforcement. BUT, I will say that these candidates would have to be in better shape than the average mid-lifer.

If you live in the US that is bullshit.

35 isn't too old to be a cop. Other than watching C.O.P.S - how often do you actually see a cop in a foot chase with a teenager?

Around here, the fastest you see cops moving is towards a Tim Hortons coffee shop.

"Section 58 of Civil Service Law was amended to to establish a maximum age limit of not more than 35 years of age for provisional or permanent appointment..."

That is just two I found with a quick search. I know for a FACT that many states have a maximum age limit. I didn't just make it up.

Jman 05-25-2009 11:10 AM

I dunno about the max age but they should raise the minimum age here in Montreal. Fucking kids with a badge and a gun ain't right.

Well some of the states I am familiar with has had these standards for 10 years or better with no lawsuit yet, at least none that I am aware of. The military also as a maximum age for joining.

18...... haha

It is a state by state thing and might even be an agency by agency thing. I have a friend that was the manager of a grocery store for 20 years and the store got sold. The owners fired him. So he decided he wanted to be a cop. He became a reserve at the age of 45 and just got hired on full time. He has always been in pretty good shape though and when he became a reserve he joined the gym and hit it hard 4 days a week to get himself in great shape.

A lot of agencies like hiring people that are a little older. They have been around the block a few times, normally are less excitable and tend to be a little more wise.

Rochard 05-25-2009 04:16 PM

Why would be anyone want to be a cop? Low pay and people that treat you like dirt. Forget that.

It's actually not bad pay if you work hard and do your job well. Not to mention a pention that is almost unequalled in any line of work. Starting pay in SoCal for many departments is over $50k and that doesn't even count overtime. It's easy to make $75k-$125k a year depending on which way you go in the department.

Loch 05-25-2009 04:23 PM

too old unless his IQ is REALLY low, then he might still be ok lol

Our local cops make over $50k/yr with tons of overtime at $70/hr.

Same here our local cops make some pretty good money. Most of them average around 70K a year and I know a few that work a lot of overtime and make more than 100K a year. My buddy who is a cop does pretty well, but his pension is what rocks. When he is 52 he will be able to retire with a full pension.

fris 05-25-2009 06:44 PM

fuck being a cop, go work for the fbi or secret service

I heard of a cop in Los Angeles making 90. Sure, Los Angeles is expensive, but 90 is a nice salary regardless of where you live. Plus perks.

Spunky 05-25-2009 06:47 PM

They would have to pay me three times that to become a cop.those guys are living targets

True, but you still have great benifits and you can still carry a gun with you on the outside...you just need a permit. What sucks is your doing time in there also.
