I got scammed (Offer to buy your domain name: XXXXXX.COM - domain nameresellers)

Hi,

This is a smart way to scam so I do not have 100% prof BUT here is what happened you be the judge (I removed the domain name that was offered to be bought and replaced it with DOMAIN1.COM):

I got these email from a google account :

Quote:

Subject :Offer to buy your domain name: DOMAIN1.COM - domain nameresellers

Dear Sir or Madam,

We are interested to buy your domain name DOMAIN1.COM and offer to buy it from you for 65% of the appraised market value.

As of now we accept appraisals from either one of the following leading appraisal companies:

sedo.com
NxxxOxxxxx.com
accuratedomains.com

If you already have an appraisal please forward it to us.

As soon as we have received your appraisal we will send you our payment (we use Paypal for amounts less than $2,000 and escrow.com for amounts above $2,000) as well as further instructions on how to complete the transfer of the domain name.

We appreciate your business,

Yours truly,

Charles Johnson
Well I was thinking to myself I was not thinking about selling this DOMAIN1.COM so lets see how much do these appraisals cost and the cheapest bulk appraisals was offered by NxxxOxxxxx.com (the name was remove) - Well I have worked with sedo.com
and the site accuratedomains.com looks OK with nice PR.
So I did not do check NxxxOxxxxx.com throughly and I ordered a bulk amount of appraisals.
I assumed that is was a solid company since it was written int he email
Quote:

...following leading appraisal ..
and it was between sedo.com and accuratedomains.com .

I paid and got an appraisal but then when I emailed the buyer I got nothing back. A week has passed. and I get a new email to another admin email of mine:

Quote:

Subject: Offer to buy your domain name: DOMAIN2.COM - domain name resellers

Dear Sir or Madam,

We are interested to buy your domain name DOMAIN2.COM and offer to buy it from you for 65% of the appraised market value.

As of now we accept appraisals from either one of the following leading appraisal companies:

sedo.com
zzzzz2.com
accuratedomains.com

If you already have an appraisal please forward it to us.

As soon as we have received your appraisal we will send you our payment (we use Paypal for amounts less than $2,000 and escrow.com for amounts above $2,000) as well as further instructions on how to complete the transfer of the domain name.

Yours truly,

J. Harris

This time it is the same formated email just another domain and "the suspected scam is now zzzzz2.com"

I looked at both zzzzz2.com and NxxxOxxxxx.com and found that both look a like both had no PR.
I'm so stupid - on the first email I got the NxxxOxxxxx.com domain had the following on the bottom of the front page :
"copyright ? 2009 NxxxOxxxxx Appraisals "
Well I guess I was scammed to believe it was one of the "leading appraisal" companies out there :(

It is a good scam since I got scammed to pay for a service that I get and I have no prof that I got scammed other then my suspicions :(

I wanted to warn you all not to get tricked l did :(
IF you got such emails please share your findings.

ALSO VERY IMPORTANT - the conclusion is go with well know established companies :)
Next time it is only Sedo for me :)

I got the same email a while back, googled their info & a few lines of the email and found out they were scammers.

Actually the conclusion should be to never get a paid appraisal period. They are almost completely worthless. Sedo appraised a domain I had at I believe $2,150 (many years ago so I don't remember much) and I sold it for $60,000 (which yes was some time after getting that appraisal but I had gotten a $20k offer only about a month or two after that appraisal). In fact, come to think of it, in order to feature it at Afternic which I tried to do once, it got appraised there - they do a low/high and the low was about $2k and the high like $19k, and that was well after I had gotten the $20k offer.

The reason appraisals aren't worth getting right now is that there's no defined system by which to do them. Those companies make their own system up to do it which has no way of working every time. I used to be in the real estate industry and they've had more or less an established system of doing real estate appraisals for decades but there's still a lot of variance and disputes, etc. The only difference is that the most they're ever off is usually about 20% and as you can see, that pales in comparison to being over 96% off, lol.

Sorry to hear that BlackElf as your a great guy to do business with.

I actually did a post here on gfy and also in the buy and sell section warning people of this scam but l guess no matter how many times it gets posted someone will miss it ! :(

They also change thier names each month and shuffle the registrars around but it always includes one of thiers and ususally sedo or moniker to give it more creditablity.

collegeboobies 05-25-2009 01:34 PM

Haha LOL of course its a scam, everyone goes for the no name cheap guy.

lazycash 05-25-2009 01:39 PM

I got the same email. Since the middle appraiser looked fishy, I did a quick whois check and saw that the domain had just been registered last month so it was obviously a scam. I then took an estibot appraisal and changed the heading to read Sedo and sent that to them along with a demand for payment and a Paypal invoice just to have some fun with them. Can you do a chargeback?

BlackElf 05-25-2009 02:16 PM

I think I can do a charge back - never had the need to do one so far ;)

BlackElf 05-25-2009 02:17 PM

And thank you all for all the comments - it is sad that I missed the posts by CyberClaire and others but such is life :)
it is not a huge deal but I hoped by posting here that some one will be saved :)
It will make my day if at least one WM will learn from this :)
