Any Ubuntu users here?

Any cool software I should know about? Any words of advice?

Just installed Ubuntu 9.04 today on my new laptop. Fucking awesome compared to the old machine and older versions of Ubuntu. Love this new one!

Check out http://www.getdeb.net/ for nice apps.

I'm a big fan of K, so I prefer Kubuntu...

Advice:

Make sure you've got the PAE kernel module installed if you have >4GB memory.
Get Wine setup to run your win32 apps.

I'm still on 8.04, I hate upgrading and I can't be bothered :2 cents:

Mint 7 works brilliantly out of the box, I must say.

I'm also running Kubuntu.

As for interesting applications, I dunno really. Sun xVM VirtualBox is one of my faves I guess..

It's a worthwhile upgrade

TheDoc 05-26-2009 02:51 PM

Use it, love it... so far it does everything I need, work wise or personal. The os hasn't crashed on me yet, no real issues of any kind. It's a bit slower on older machines, well video is, I haven't tried it on a more updated machine. When my main Windows PC crashes, I will swap it out with ubuntu and never look back.

SuzzyQ 05-26-2009 04:00 PM

I also use it and love it. What really sold us on Ubuntu was it found and configured the wireless card on the Dell lappy. And we did absalutely nothing to help. With Fedora, it was a pain in the ass. Another pleasant superise was getting our Verizon card to work. It was totally painless.

I love Ubuntu.
