List: a good underrated/overlooked/obscure Movie
It's that time again,
I'm looking for a good underrated/overlooked/obscure movie. Need to watch some good movies I haven't seen, some diamonds in the rough. They don't all have to be independent, they can be foreign films, period pieces, movies that got a bad rap but were good, limited releases, basically any good movie that wasn't extremely commercial and publicized. GFY always has some great movie suggestions, so let's keep it up. I'll start with the following suggestions: 1. The Young Poisoner's Handbook - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115033/ 2. The Magician - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0461989/ 3. The Assassination of Jesse James - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443680/ 4. Chopper - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0221073/ 5. Harsh Times - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0433387/ 6. Empire of the Sun - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092965/ 7. Following - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0154506/ 8. Happiness - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0147612/ 9. Legend - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089469/ Remember the criteria - underrated/overlooked/obscure. Really looking forward to some suggestions, haven't seen anything good in a bit :thumbsup |

Dead End Drive-In
In a typically desolate near future where the under-privileged are forced to fend for themselves in areas of total decay, Jimmy "Crabs" (likable Ned Manning) goes to the Star Drive-In with hottie girlfriend Carmen (Natalie McCurry), only to find that he's now trapped there. The powers that be are obviously trying to keep the lower class locked down and segregated, and this "drive-in" is more a prison than anything. Crabs isn't about to just accept defeat and adjust to this new life; he understandably wants *out*. A very cool movie with outstanding art direction. Much of the landscape is graffiti-laden, and the level of bleak devastation is most impressive. The scenery is magnificently photographed in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio by Paul Murphy. The cutting edge soundtrack is full of catchy, if sometimes pure 1980's cheesy, pop and rock songs. (In fact, the hairstyles and wardrobes also firmly date the film, but this isn't always a bad thing. It certainly gave me a good blast from the past.) It may owe a certain debt to the trend-setting "Mad Max", but this Down Under sci-fi / punk / action thriller is quite good in its own right. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090915/ |
