Amazon is the best online retailer.

Intrinsic 05-29-2009 01:13 PM

shipped as in to your house?
do you live in their basement?

Tom_PM 05-29-2009 01:16 PM

I'm not a prime member, but the gifts I bought 3 days ago for my gf arrived yesterday to her house with 2 day shipping.

The only thing I dislike is that Amazon caved into the state of NY and now charges NY sales tax on all deliveries to NY :(

Incidentally, the case all hinged on the simple fact that amazon has *affiliates* that live in NY state, and therefore under the law that equates to amazon having a PHYSICAL presence in NY, and THEREfore they are compelled by law to collect sales tax. Blah. Very bad precedent.

yup Amazon rocks! I order blue rays from them about twice a month along with various other things and they are always super fast :thumbsup

CIVMatt 05-29-2009 03:05 PM

Apparently you've never ordered from newegg! :)

i buy from newegg often, in fact bought a 1.5 terabyte drive from them for $129 just a week or so ago.

I love that place.... Great deals... fast shipping and a return policy that basically makes me fell like I can throw my TV out the window ala Pink Floyd and get a new one.

I probably spend $20,000+ a year on books and electronics and stuff with Amazon and i have just one issue and its not really with them its their sellers. Its the practice of selling stuff for .01cent like iphone screen covers and then adding $6.00 mailing cost. Who the fuck do they think they are dealing with ? The mail cost on a cover i received recently was just 50cents by regular USPS so why the deception ? why not just charge a realistic price for the cover and not this deceptive way of doing business. Anytime i see this on Amazon i switch to another seller who charges a realistic price for mail even if i pay a little more for the product.

OK rant over Amazon still rocks :thumbsup:thumbsup

I sell on Amazon, and they do that for a couple of reasons. In your instance, Amazon only takes their cut from the sale price, not the shipping price.

Also, in terms of sales, it makes a huge difference if a seller gets the buy box. (that isn't just based on price, but price is a factor). Lots of times, as a featured seller, I will have the buy box, and be charging 3 times what the other sellers are that listed as "also available from", and I will make the sale. Shipping costs aren't factored in to the buy box positioning formula, so that is another reason.

Or that is my guess, anyhow. I don't know for sure, as things I sell are priced much higher than a penny. :)

ebay use to be the same way and i hated it. You would always see a item a whole lot cheaper then others but then go to get it shipped and it was way higher than shipping should be. Then i guess enough people complained cause now the shipping price is always listed on ebay and you don't see people playing that game anymore

peedy 06-05-2009 03:23 AM

Amazon and Newegg are probably the two places I make 90% of my purchases.

umbralui 06-05-2009 03:34 AM

That's the same here, although the one thing that I found recently is that Amazon actually has some cheaper prices than NewEgg on a few of the recent items I purchased.

I do love Amazon Prime, I just joined it 2 months ago and it's sure nice having 2nd day free shipping or $3.99 overnight :)
