My son bought a second hand pc from a this couple, when I drove him to go pick it up, the woman said she had just deleted her private data from the hard drive.
When we get it home everything she had deleted was in the recycle bin, she hadent even emptied it.
There was all kinds of family pics, word docs, mp3s and included was a few of her doing some rather naughty things..

Its stupidity... imagine if she had docs with passwords to bank accounts. We dident go through all of the docs but there were a hell of a lot of them. There were even pics of some ones wedding and loads of them and thier kids on outings

You kinda feel bad for looking at thier private lives

Even though you bought the pc the law can be wierd about using any info you find.

The best thing is to erase the hard drive before you even look at it.
That way if the seller does get a bank account ripped the cops can't find that you
have any info by searching the computer and blame you for it.
Also removes any possible CP!

Best to put old drives in a bucket of water for a few days. Or throw them in the sea if you don't want them ever read.

I used to do data recovery in a previous life, as a few have said, it's time consuming, but it's very easy to reconstruct a drive.

I think drilling holes in your drive is more effective than water.

Most people don't have a clue how to wipe drives. Then, they give their computers to charities and all their details end up accessible to whoever in Africa was gifted the old computer.

My buddy works in the IT department of a large accounting firm and the employees get new laptops every 24 months, he is always getting laptops back with nude pics on them.

The loser claims he re-formats them and deletes all the pics and videos, not worth losing his job over keeping a copy. Personally I think he's full of shit.

Better to open the drive, pull out the platters, and make clocks out of them.
Or make a batch file to write a single solid block of 1's to fill the drive, followed by a solid block of 0's, and repeat until paranoia subsides.

I use to live in a 30 level building. Everyone took stuff down to the garbage room over the weekend because computers couldn't fit in the trash bin on each level. So I use to sneak down at 4am on monday morning and rip all the hard drives out. Most of the time there was nothing on them or warcraft or other game. But I did find 3 hard drives with asian's fucking on camera. Funny about 2 days later I walked passed them and said "nice video". They didn't understand a fucken word I said as no one in that building spoke english. lol

The amazing thing is that even my own grandmother...who barely knows how to use her computer...knows to pull the harddrive out before she gives the old computer away.

Yup, i watched a documentary on bbc i think a while back and it showed you what happens to computers that people have given to "charity".

They get shipped to Africa, and then bam! You get xxx amount taken out of your bank.

Any old computers i have i smash into a million pieces...
