Sometimes I Think Us Americans Should All Just Start Learning Spanish
Living here in the Midwest I never thought I would see so many businesses with Spanish names. We have gas stations and used car lots with Spanish names. And damn, one out of ever three restaurants is Mexican. I like tacos just as much as the next guy but how about some variety.

Based on your thread title, we really should focus on mastering English first.

Try living in Florida Mike

Go get yourself banged up in a Mexican jail for 6 and a half months...
Guess what? You'll understand Spanish when you come out! BUT... After you get out... IE, in about a year. It wont make sense no more ! |

Learning another language is NEVER a bad idea.

It's your official second language, and they try to teach it to you in school.
Why shouldn't you learn it? :) |
Sesame Street has been teaching Spanish since at least the early 80's. It was how I could tell I was watching the US version, because the Canadian version taught French. :)

It was sad, one day I was at the store, and a guy comes up to me with a box of something or other and in Spanish asks me if I can read it to him. I only speak a little Spanish, so I point out the part of the box that is in Spanish, he he told me he couldn't read. :(:Oh crap

I live in Northern California and it's gotten bad here.
Americans tend to think of "fast food jobs" as being "beneath them", and thus all of the Hispanic kids work at all of the fast food restaurants. On one hand I feel uncomfortable when I'm in Burger King and I'm surrounded by people speaking Spanish, yet on the other hand it seems a brand new class of Americans are emerging that will have second class status. It's funny because when I watch TV I see all white people. But when I go to the mall I'm seeing everything but white people - lots of Hispanic, Asians, and other dark skinned people. The demographics of the US is changing. |
Having learned Spanish in high school but not using it since I didn't know any Spanish speaking people in Hawaii in the 80's, I now struggle to communicate when visiting Andorra, Spain, and Costa Rica. It really could have come in handy when I was in Curacao and of course Mexico as well, but was surprised when I had trouble communicating when shopping in Miami.
I encourage my 18 year old daughter to get better at Spanish, but like a lot of Americans, especially in the South, it seems like it's beneath her although she won't admit it, which annoys me since she doesn't realize how many countries it would help her in, including the US. |
america is just a mix of people from a bunch of different countries, they come in waves, italians, irish, germans, now it's mexicans. change is a good thing.

Living in Vancouver makes me wish I knew Mandarin, actually... Spanish would be so much easier.

Once I went to a Burger King in Hialeah, FL and the entire menu board was in spanish only :helpme

In NYC we have more Peurto Ricans living here than in Peurto Rico, and now the Dominican population is growning very fast here. In the past I dated a ton of spanish women and never learned any spanish. It can't hurt to learn...especially 80% of my building speaks spanish. I am making an effort to learn Japanese since my wifes parents speak no english.

If you take into account that some southern US states like Florida where ruled by the Spanish crown untill the early 19Th century, I hardly find it surprising that so many people speak Spanish in the US, basically in America south of USA nearly all coutries speak Spanish,Brazil is the mayor exception. :pimp

More than one language is always good :)

Europeans laugh at the all too common American notion of "I'm an American, all I need to know is English".
I personally feel that all people should strive to learn as many languages as possible. The number of languages you can speak and the number of words you know is directly proportional to your ability to manifest nebulous ideas into something tangible. |
We, most of the american, already speak spanish. Are you talking about north america? :)
|
Isn't it common for most Europeans to speak 3 languages? If you were in College and you wanted to move to Switzerland and become a citizen you would have to go back to the 9th grade ... We're cheated . |
