Anybody have gout?
I will start off by saying I really don't. However, my best girlfriend has recently had it surface and she is driving me nuts by not attempting to eat a better diet to control it. Does anybody here have or had gout and have you controlled it by diet at all? If so, what are danger foods for you and what are the total green light foods?

Show her some pictures of people with clubfeet, then she might take you seriously.

sure why not..

It's primarily diet-based. Unfortunately, it gets worse with age. Purines are hard to avoid but they can be avoided. I sometimes get gout attacks at the bottom of my feet--feels like a thousand tiny needles digging midway. After I increased the veggies in my diet and avoided beans, nuts, tofu, etc it's been very manageable.

i have had it before and i dont wish that kind of pain on anyone...
ok i can help truely..hit me up on icq if you want...and i know im about to open a ton of jokes here on gfy with my below response...but ive had it before, its horrible and i can usually tell if another flare up is about to come on and can completly stop it before it flares up...(usually after a show, i eat bad foods at shows) one of the best things to get and honestly flush the system with TRUE black cherry juice...there is a company that makes "Just Cherry" juice...the stuff is usually found in the natural foods, not your drink section....they have like "Just Cherry" "Just Pomagrande" (notice the "JUST" before it, its like their trademark)....drink two of those bottles in like a 36hr period and it will totally help...you can water it down a bit as Cherry juice can be a bit of an aquired taste... stay away from any canned type foods...esp like canned meats.... |

I had Gout for 2 weeks when I was 20. I was living in Japan and I was eating red meat like no tomorrow. They treated me like a king and fed me well. All of a sudden my hand swelled up really big and my joints were freezing up. They gave me some meds I took for 10 days and it's never been back. |

yeah I get it. and its PAIN PAINFUL. I broke my knee and that was nothing compared to a gout attack. usually only guys get it. cherrys help. but I have certain trigger foods. everyone is different as long as I dont eat processed meats I'm fine. Plenty of water be sure your pee is clear. go to the doctor, my doctor gave me a shot and I felt better in 20 minutes. you can take alupurnol too that got them to stop recurring. its a degenerative disease so you ruin your joints each time. But water is the key. no alcohol. no tea or soda. and fresh cherrys. no protein during an attack. good luck.

My best friend's husband had it for a while. He started drinking sparkling mineral water daily and it cleared up.

all good advice here. Lots of water , cherry juice is good but has lots of sugar which isn't great for you. One thing I've found is the worst trigger food is Turkey. Avoid red meats and drink tons of water. Alopuranol works but as a preventative mostly not after the fact so much. Gout usually effects people of eastern European decent and those who eat a lot of foods with heavy sauces. I wish your friend a speedy recovery and a life free of Gout!

I read in the NY Times recently that gout is popping up in record numbers and that pharmaceutical companies are re-releasing old and new medicines to treat people with the symptoms. This is expected to make a windfall of profits for the industry. Gout is almost entirely preventable if you eat a healthy diet and stay active. Usually you see people who are really far out of shape, inactive and who eat bad diets getting flare ups of gout.

I've had it once where it was real bad. Not sure what I ate to cause it but I do believe it was after a night out at a Brazilian Steakhouse and I was on a meat kick. It is pretty painful but eventually goes away. I couldn't put my shoe on at one point due to the pain. My doctor said to try and eat grapes and some other fruits. I've done that since the attack and haven't had it again.
