Britian- most violent country in Europe, also worse than South Africa and U.S.

Britain's violent crime record is worse than any other country in the European union, it has been revealed.

Official crime figures show the UK also has a worse rate for all types of violence than the U.S. and even South Africa - widely considered one of the world's most dangerous countries.

The figures comes on the day new Home Secretary Alan Johnson makes his first major speech on crime, promising to be tough on loutish behaviour.

congrats on gun control, looks to be working out really well for you guys!

emjay 07-05-2009 03:53 PM

Don't believe everything you read in the Daily Mail:2 cents:

I have just moved back there after 15 years overseas, it's good to be home:thumbsup

Blazed 07-05-2009 03:54 PM

But criminologists say crime figures can be affected by many factors, including different criminal justice systems and differences in how crime is reported and measured.

In Britain, an affray is considered a violent crime, while in other countries it will only be logged if a person is physically injured.

There are also degrees of violence. While the UK ranks above South Africa for all violent crime, South Africans suffer more than 20,000 murders each year - compared with Britain's 921 in 2007.

'These figures are misleading.
Levels of police recorded crime statistics from different countries are simply not comparable since they are affected by many factors, for example the recording of violent crime in other countries may not include behaviour that we would categorise as violent crime.

'Violent crime in England and Wales has fallen by almost a half a peak in 1995 but we are not complacent and know there is still work to do. That is why last year we published 'Saving lives. Reducing harm. Protecting the public. An Action Plan for Tackling Violence 2008-11'.'

I suggest you take a look at real violent crime figures in America and South Africa and so on. Burglary, homicide etc and then compare them with the UK...

Blazed 07-05-2009 03:59 PM

In 2007 there were 921 murders in the UK, compared with 17,000 in the US. You have a population 5x the size but a murder rate more than 17x.

The article above is bullshit political spin.

Libertine 07-05-2009 04:01 PM

Intentional homicide rate per 100k citizens
South Africa - 38.6
USA - 5.6
UK - 2.03
Canada - 1.85
Netherlands - 0.97
Japan - 0.64

The murder rate of the US is 275% of the murder rate in the UK - gun control appears to be working out quite well :2 cents:

GatorB 07-05-2009 04:01 PM

yes because if they had guns violent crime would be doubled or trippled. fucking idiot. what is the gun death rate there in the UK comapred to the US? 1/200th? Seems like gun control is working just fine

Check the stats on all REAL violent crimes and the US is way in front, not the petty shit included in this "report".

redwhiteandblue 07-05-2009 06:16 PM

We don't actually have the most violent crime here in the UK.

We do have some of the stupidest newspapers.

halfpint 07-05-2009 06:21 PM

I live in the UK and I also lived in South Africa for about 18 years and there is no way that the Uk is more violent than SA

Love this guy posting in every thread without even reading it.
As for the topic... the Daily Mail isn't the best resource for facts.

StuartD 07-05-2009 08:24 PM

Why stop there? They should include "being mad at each other" as a violent crime and make it seem like the UK's rate of violence is through the roof!!!

The spin doctors were seriously slacking on this one.

How many of those homicides were in the ghettos and how many were in the "real" USA?

american pervert 07-05-2009 09:59 PM

South Africa (Black 79.5%, White 9.2%, Asian 2.5%)
USA (White 74.8%, Hispanic 14.8%, Black 13.4%, Asian 4.4%)
UK (White 90.94%, Black 2.0%, Asian 0.8%)
Canada (83% White, 7% Asian, Black 2.5%)
Netherlands (White 98%, Black 1%)
Japan (99.4% Japanese, 0.6% other)

Drake 07-06-2009 04:49 AM

Great example of how stats can be manipulated. UK is not anywhere near as violent as South Africa.

Twistys Tim 07-06-2009 05:10 AM

The Daily Mail specializes in this kind of hysterical non-factual reporting.

AtlantisCash 07-06-2009 05:15 AM

Ban all guns like Norway does, Plain and simple.

i m mostly liberal myself, i believe people have right to choose what to do or not, but there should be only one limit and this limit is do not harm other's life, so ban all guns and don't touch the rest, This Earth would be a happier and better place with that way imho.

posting bullshit and later playing it down as trolling doesn't work :2 cents:

and i am not sure if your native indian population and the millions of slaves would agree with your point regarding India. Although the British indeed behaved pretty badly whereever they went. but that was neither the point of those articles nor of this thread.

Sarah_Jayne 07-06-2009 05:22 AM

There probably is an actual debate to be had here but not when the Daily Mail is your only source.
