Clicks dropped from 3500 to 700

Okay, so I'm testing some various things. I put up a particular banner, id consistently pulls in 3000-3500 clicks a day. Yesterday I switched out the banner to try a different one, same size and same site. I even think the new banner is more enticing. The clicks drop down to 700. No other factors have changed.

Does that make sense? Can that change in banner really kill clicks by that much?

I'm going to give it a day or two and see if the numbers pick back up. Otherwise I'm switching back. That just seems like an insane drop.

This may be the first time I ever saw a typo from you.

this thread is useless without pics

I love doing testing like that. And yes clicks can change that drastically. It's always interesting to test the difference between text links and banners.

slys getting sloppy in his old age.

slapass 07-09-2009 08:42 PM

I have seen that. What is worse for me is people do not like what I like.

woj 07-09-2009 08:44 PM

you need to run the ads at the same time, I mean rotate them randomly throughout the day... comparing day 1 to day 2 is useless... :2 cents:

with banners it is all about pulling clicks. It can be the greatest looking eye candy in the world, but if it doesn't leave the surfer wanting more they won't click.

CYF 07-09-2009 09:25 PM

I'm interested in seeing the two different banners, care to post 'em?

SBJ 07-09-2009 09:29 PM

yup banners are so hit or miss these days that you almost have to put a 728x90 up for it to be seen..

I much rather just find a hot image and crop it and put text below the ad thumb.. pulls a lot more clicks than banners but you still have to find the right image to draw the clicks but I have a secret to that too :winkwink:

sometimes a banner needs to be seen over and over to build clicks, wont surprise me if the same banner tomorrow does a bit better

I could see that being true. My particular situation is always fresh eyes though.

did you put in the banner "click here" ? That makes a diffrence of 300%

San 07-10-2009 05:13 AM

this thread is useless without banners

sortie 07-10-2009 08:02 AM

My use of banners is at an all time low.

There are better ways.

This is completely true. And what is even odder is how I have to tell banner designers to do this to this day.

that seems obvious on hindsight but thanks for pointing it out. Good info.

Tom_PM 07-10-2009 12:57 PM

I bet you could dig a bit into your traffic sources and figure out why :)

Mike Semen 07-10-2009 01:24 PM

Yep, results can change that drastically. If you want some real hard data, get Google Website Optimizer and run some split/multivariate tests on the bugger.
