the news was on a bigscreen tv at the restaurant...

today I experienced a small event that I thought was profound....

I was at a fast type restaurant and the news channel was on a big screen tv, and there was a couple of girls, maybe 20 to 25 years old sitting at a nearby table eating....

the news was pretty intense, some important stories about a soldier getting killed in Afghanistan and the economy and health care, etc....

the two girls were completely undistracted by the television as the news stories went by, then all of the sudden there was a story about Jessica Simpson getting dumped by her boyfriend..... instantly the two girls stopped all eating and talking and focused on the television as if the most important world changing news story had just come on, and remained focused through the whole Jessica Simpson story, after which they went back to their conversation.......

.... at that moment, I couldn't help feeling a little bit disturbed about the world we live in :2 cents:

Jessica Simpson is such a no-talent that when she gains a bunch of weight, people ignore her. She just needs to keep on her extra 40 lbs. and drift off into oblivion like Ashlee.

I am sick of all news, specially because you don't know what is just propaganda and what is a real thing. But when people need desperatly to know someones private life it is just fucking stupid.

There is a clip I have heard where a guy is talking to a Fox news anchor and they are talking about 9/11 (this was about 6 months after the attack) the guy is talking about the attack and some of the investigation then all of a sudden the anchor cuts him off and says, "Sorry to interrupt, but this just in. Jlo and Ben Affleck have broken up."

You can hear the guy talking about 9/11 in background saying, "are you serious?"

Yeah its fucked up but I admit I'd like to hear more good news reported with the bad, but good news doesn't bring ratings.

d-null 07-16-2009 02:23 PM

on a semi related topic, I was in a coffeshop and a couple of teenage girls were sitting at the next table, so I couldn't help but overhear their conversation (and it is always pretty much the same conversation I've overheard teenage girls talking before).

amazing how so many teenage girls can have the same basic conversation with each other over and over again about how some dumbass guy did this or said this or made a fool of himself or likes her or her friend etc etc :1orglaugh it is pretty painful to listen to when you are trying to get some work done in close proximity to the stupidness :1orglaugh

note: the dumbass guy is a dumbass by my words, they don't seem to realize that though

Agreed fucked up, what a sad state of affairs. People are getting more retarded by the day.

2 similiar sad stories...

At Phoenix Forum 3 years ago with a girl, not a model, and a few of us began discussing Iraq and the girl chirps in... "We're at war?" to which we responde... "Yes, in Iraq!" and she chirps back... "What's Iraq!"

then...

Before heading to the Atlanta Forum last year a girl with us heard we were going to Atlanta, Georgia for a show to which she responds... "Don't go there, aren't we at war in Georgia!"

What a world!

pornguy 07-16-2009 02:46 PM

Honestly I don't see why this would bother you.. You should have expected nothing less from the idiotized people in today's world.

TURN OFF THE FUCKING TV and get on with life.

...

I guess the bother is because we are living in an information age that is unprecedented, it is sooooo easy to learn and achieve and be informed compared to even 10 or 20 years ago, yet the majority in society seem even more "idiotized" than ever :helpme:1orglaugh

if it was just that easy, but nowadays you can read stupid shit on your phone, with twitter....ok, maybe some good has come from things like twitter, but 95% of it is just plain stupidity...

once entertainment took over the news, the news ceased to exist..and yes it does get tiresome to hear about wars, death, and threats all day long, but there truely is alot more things happening out there that they could cover more news if there was no commercials and no money to be made during news programs...and 24 hr news channels that really only talk for maaaaybe 3hrs and then loop it, i wouldnt consider real news organizations...yeah im looking at you CNN...

last i knew isnt there whole stations dedicated to celebrity news....E! MTV (god knows there is no music there)...but then again, we live in a society of braindead zombies...when "reality" tv is considered a role model, we have problems...

and to steal a great line "what really grinds my gears" is when i do decide to watch the news and i get "Breaking News" (and i instantly mutter...great a car chase)...and wtf if it isnt a stupid fucking car chase on one of the highways here in CA....they will spend the entire 30 mins "talking" about what may be the reason for the car chase, mind you they dont know its speculation, they will tell you where it started, where they are, over and over again...nothing is more important to CA-ians than car chases and hollywood stars...

whoa, ranting here....sorry...back on topic, yes its sad the state of our youth is when it comes to what is important and just the fact of understanding the world as a bigger picture....just as long as they can get their lattes and know what celebrity is dating who and wearing what...life is too easy for most teenagers because parents dont parent...oops there i go again ranting...i should have a soapbox....sorry

digifan 07-16-2009 03:10 PM

News keep being the same.. boring and depressing.

d-null 07-16-2009 03:10 PM

nice post Smiley, and it's true

the news stations don't cover hardly anything in the large percentage of what is going on in the world that really affects people's lives

that reminds me of a story from about five years ago. I go out to dinner with a bunch of friends to a seafood place. We all get clam chowder as an appetizer. A friend of mine's wife (now ex-wife) says, as she is eating the chowder, "I love clam chowder, but I hate clams." when it is pointed out to her that there are clams in the clam chowder she was shocked. She really thought clam chowder was just the name and the chewy meat was chicken.
