Four die of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning in Detroit

Detroit -- Three children and a man died early this morning from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning on Detroit's west side, according to senior Detroit fire officials.

The victims -- a 37-year-old man, two boys and a girl -- died about 3 a.m. today in their home on the 6700 block of Grandmont, fire officials said.

Neighbors said the children were ages 6 to 14 years old. They said the family had lived in the home for about three years.

The mother of the children found the victims unconscious, according to WJBK-TV (Channel 2). The family was using a generator for power, fire officials said.

Electric service to the home had been shut off, according to WJBK. Neighbors thought the power had been shut off within the past week. The generator was kept in the home's basement.

The children, ages 6 to 14 years old, were taken to Sinai Grace Hospital, according to WJBK. The man was taken to Oakwood Hospital.

Neighbor Hamed Heleeji, 42, said he watched emergency medical services technicians attempt to revive the children and saw that their mother had difficulty breathing after leaving the house.

"It makes me sad," he said. "They are very nice people. They looked out for each other."

Haleeji said he and the family took turns mowing each other's lawns and shared tools.
