There are some decent ecommerce plugins, some for free, some paid. About the free ones, I'd say eShop is the best. Needs some tweaking and could be way better (organized/intuitive), but it does the work.

As for the thread subject, yes, we did a few and have a couple on waiting list. As a matter of fact I'm finishing one right now (a virtual clips store) adding a 3rd party script to WP and works like a charm. For next project/s we'll be "joomla-izing" high end WP themes (needless to say all our work is custom, doh).

At this point, there's barely anything you can't do with WP, if they change their virtual linking organization, well... bye bye to most CMS out there
