It's 17 years already and Guns n' Roses still have it

Never really found out why this bunch of punks always worked so well with me.

Ever since I heard the first tones as a kid I knew I gotta get that record, ever since I got the first "Use Your Illusion I" tape 17 years ago and listened to that on an old tape recorder, I don't remember I would ever not enjoy listening to that.

It was something that just felt like totally natural to listen to, remember I was also reading all the lyrics hungry to understand, with 2 years of English classes at that time.

Now I listen to the same thing again after years and it still has it (although yeah it's Appetite for Destruction that really is their best record and some of the most significant piece of rock of the 80's if not ever)

Well I ain't the introverted kid with silly long hair and a trademark denim jacket anymore, I guess some music was the very background to all the ups and downs of a juvenile life, that's probably what makes it still so enjoyable to listen to.

It seems like I somehow grew older, but I still feel the kid inside, once I hear the right bands or tunes.

The Spaghetti Incident was complete and utter crap. They never should have covered punk and glam.

Dirty Lord 08-07-2009 05:30 AM

Don't make me feel old.. I still remember watching the Welcome to the Jungle video on Headbanger ball late at night on MTV. Back when MTV actually played music videos that is.

I also had that album on cassette same as NIN Pretty hate machine..and many others.

danclips 08-07-2009 07:52 AM

I was right behind the curve with gnr. Last year of highschool, and we were all about metallica, helloween, megadeath and king diamond. gnr was pussy metal. I can appreciate it much more now than I could then.

crockett 08-07-2009 07:55 AM

btw speaking of GnR .. wanna see some crazy shit, watch this vid.

someone posted it a while back, but damn who would have ever thought..

Jarmusch 08-07-2009 07:58 AM

Appetite for Destruction was actually the 1st CD I bought in my mid-teens, something I'm sure most kids today have never done in their lives.

Manowar 08-07-2009 08:22 AM

chinese democracy isn't too bad either, much better than what i was expecting

Back when MTV played music? Shit dude, you are old. You're going to need to change the stubble in your avatar to gray. :winkwink:

Scott McD 08-07-2009 08:39 AM

Never been a HUGE fan, but yeah they aren't bad at all...

Houdini 08-07-2009 08:45 AM

I love Appetite and Lies. Even as a kid, I thought Illusion was just crap. I was 15, I stayed up until midnight to get the tape at a local record store. My brother and I both bought it, we came home and listened to it and we were just shaking our heads, no, no, no. Instantly, I thought it sucked. They had it right with Appetite. When I heard Axl starting to rap, I knew it was over.

tranza 08-07-2009 08:48 AM

I feel the same thing about that...it's so natural listen to their songs...:thumbsup

SykkBoy 08-07-2009 08:51 AM

I actually really liked Chinese Democracy
the more I listen, the more it grows on me and has become my second favorite GnR, behind Appetite...

It's overproduced and self-indulgent, but Axl's voice sounds amazing and his songwriting is pretty damn good.

Cyber Fucker 08-07-2009 08:57 AM

Yup, Appetite for Destruction rocks! I often listen to this while walking out. Definitely a cool piece.

If it is not bad then the marketing people behind it are doing a rotten job and I NEVER hear or have heard about it in the media, only thing I remember is the Dr.Pepper stunt.

Oh yes they did, just not with your generation as they where still toddlers back then :winkwink:

Smiley 08-07-2009 10:09 AM

i remember when Appetite came out and was played all the time at ASU...been a fan for years, when CD came out i gave it a shot but sadly i thought it was way over produced...a trait Axl was famous for doing...

i read the Slash suto-biography and he even said that was a hard thing for Axl to break...

to have GnR capture that magic again would be great but probably never going to happen...Slash is a fantastic guitarist and Axl was definitely talented

as for MTV..shit making me feel old..i remember when "Video killed the radio star" premiered....

Deesnuts 08-07-2009 10:17 AM

blah blah......blah

flashfire 08-07-2009 11:18 AM

The first record has some really great songs that will be classics heard at NASCAR, NFL games and selling consumer products for the next 25 years.
