Bad Idea to put a mobile paysite on a .mobi domain?

If I want to make a paysite directed at only mobile users is It a good or bad idea to put It on a .mobi domain?

fatfoo 08-13-2009 10:06 AM

.mobi

I never heard of those, sounds weird. Wouldn't it sounds better with .com ?

It's best to be able to get the .com and the .mobi. Having the word "mobile" on a .com domain is much more powerful as it picks up more in the SE listings, whereas .mobi is still so new that it will take awhile to catch on - if it does.

The thing is that I have the .mobi domain but I don't have the same .com domain seeing as the domain is a very very good one for the niche I'm going after.

mobi domains work perfectly well :)

You should test your mobile site on ready.mobi to see how well it will display on mobile devices.

If you want to be whitelisted on mobile search engines i would say definately go with .mobi

google is an investor in dotMobi along with nokia, microsoft, samsung, visa, vodaphone, t-mobile, ericsson, TIM, GSM to name a few.

Yep, Visa is a investor too. So if my site is gonna be mobile only anyway I might as well put it on my good .mobi domain?

I would say that is a smart move Nicky. But there is no substitute for owning a great generic .com which you can redirect mobile visitors to your .mobi without the risk of goog penalizing for duplicate content.

If you goog the .mobi in Vic's Sig spot youll see it in #4 spot for the name without space and #8 with a space.

Then if you use googles mobile search youll find the name in #1 and #2 without space and #5 and #6 with space. interesting yes?

I would say m.google.com and yahoo.mobi are currently doing very well.

Yea. When building a mobile porn site what is the best width to go? Is It 320? Also picture content should be pretty small, like 320x480 or something?

Allison 08-13-2009 12:37 PM

I'd agree to register both the .com and .mobi, but probably keep the traffic on the .com using a subdomain or a directory method like m.google.com or google.com/m

Too bad I only have the .mobi and aquiring the .com will probably cost 100k+. :upsidedow

I don't have the .com version. Only the .mobi

Is It a good idea to make the paysite on It even though I don't have the .com?

Only if you can live with the idea that a chunk of your traffic is going to the .COM

Actually 320px wide is huge for a WAP page. Any bigger than 200px width you will be penalized by ready.mobi. As Bird suggested in another post it is best to use a device detect script that will serve the proper image size for the mobile that is visiting.

if you are going to invest your time into the project, I'd get a different .com and go with that :2 cents:
