Saw an interview early on with the creators who expressed surprise that "tweet" caught on. Because they used it to send quick little notes, which they called "twitters" and doing so they called "twittering". So they called it Twitter. Lo and behold the public in it's predictably unpredictable way, forwarded the term "tweet" and they were screwed. With every cable news network and talk show host calling it "tweet" and smiling at the painfully cute word, there was no turning it back.
