Food: What to do with blueberries?

I know this is off-topic, but welcome to GFY. :)

Since it's blueberry season, I picked up 2 10lb boxes of fresh picked berries from the farm down the street. Does anyone have any favourite blueberry recipes? Muffins? Pancakes? Smoothies?

any ideas? This is a heck of a lot of berries :)

Sly 08-19-2009 06:51 PM

I like them in pancakes and also my Rice Krispies.

EscortBiz 08-19-2009 06:52 PM

whatever you do try to really chew them well because the body dont really break em up well

Furious_Male 08-19-2009 06:52 PM

Freeze them and make smoothies out of them. I like to add frozen blueberries into my vanilla protein shakes after a workout.

Tanker 08-19-2009 06:55 PM

definetly freeze them they wont last long in the fridge or on the counter I would break them up into 1 cup portions throw them in some freezer bags and use them as you need em!

with that being said what did you pay for 20 pounds of blueberries

~Ray 08-19-2009 06:57 PM

cut them in half and add them to banana ice cream base.. then hand churn the ice cream

$18 for a 10lb box of picked that day berries. I couldn't say no :) The season ends on Thursday, so I got one box on Sunday and one today. I've been cycling them through the freeze cylcle already (single layer on cookie sheet in freezer til solid, then bag them).

Blueberry Pie
Apple-Blueberry Crisp
Blueberry Waffles
Blueberry Muffins
Blueberry Cheesecake
Anything is better with fresh Blueberries :thumbsup

My wife and daughter have actually gone out to one of those U-Pick berry farms. She came home the first week with 7lbs for $5. The next week she came home with 10 for $5. So here we are with 17lbs of blueberries. We do pancakes and/or muffins for the kids on the weekend. She uses them in her smoothies on the weekdays. It's a good thing we finally invested in a deep freeze last year.

Cyandin 08-19-2009 07:10 PM

I just had a huge handful in my Cheerios this morning - YUM!!

LiveDose 08-19-2009 07:13 PM

Muffins.

CunningStunt 08-19-2009 07:13 PM

Make some of it into jam, it's delicious. Very rich in Vitamins C and A.

candyflip 08-19-2009 07:16 PM

I put them in freezer bags with a 1/2 of sugar.

Elli, why dont you get a kid pool, put the blue berries in there, start getting naked and get in the pool and then send us pics :)

pornguy 08-20-2009 08:36 AM

I have some ideas that come to mind with the blue berry's, your boobies and ... well let me show you the rest.

seeandsee 08-20-2009 08:38 AM

trow them or you will die from cancer, or you will be better? :D

Tom_PM 08-20-2009 08:40 AM

Toss some in applesauce. Better than ice cream for dessert, or breakfast, or snack..

Could do any number of really easy compote or crumble type recipes. Or just bake some shortcake. Why should strawberries hog all the fun? Try not to turn blue! :)

JFK 08-20-2009 08:41 AM

I've been known to have them in champagne, but not 20lbs of it :winkwink:

BestXXXPorn 08-20-2009 08:41 AM

If you have that many you should make some Blueberry Preserves! Keeps well and tastes fantastic! I'm a huge Rhubarb fan so:

Blueberry and Rhubarb Jam

Ingredients:
1.00 L rhubarb (about 700 g)
2.00 L blueberries (about 1.4 kg)
250.00 mL water
1.00 L sugar

Procedure:

Trim rhubarb; cut in 1 cm pieces. Combine fruits. Add water; bring to boil and cook 10 min. Add sugar, stirring to dissolve. Bring to boil, stirring frequently. Boil to jam stage (about 15 min). When jam stage is reached remove from heat. Stir and skim 5 min. Pour into hot sterilized jars. Cool and seal. May be stored up to 1 year.

Alternate methods for determining jam stage: 1. The temperature test - mixture should reach 102 C to 104 C. 2. The plate test - use a cold plate from freezer. Pour a small amount of boiling mixture onto plate. Return to freezer; wait 1 min, then check for gelling. If gelling has not occurred return sample to kettle and continue to boil, testing every 2 min. Note: When using this test, remove kettle from heat. Makes about 3 L.

tranza 08-20-2009 09:29 AM

bns666 08-20-2009 09:51 AM

WarChild 08-20-2009 09:54 AM

Sounds pretty cheap! I just went to a u-pick farm and got some peaches, cost me $1.29/lb I think it was. Came home with about 12-14 peaches and cost me roughly $5.50

ToplistBlog_Com 08-20-2009 04:14 PM

I vote for muffins.

ADSinc 08-20-2009 05:52 PM

What am I doing with blueberries? Nothing. But I recently discovered that blueberries juice is damn tasty!
