Piracy

Yarr! We know there are plenty of you out there downloading pirated digital booty, especially in Windows land. But it's never been convenient to be a pirate compared with being a paying customer. For example, if you're a legitimate buyer purchasing movies off iTunes, you can easily stream your media to your legitimately purchased Apple TV. If you're a pirate, you'd have to go through roundabout programs and hardware to re-create the experience.

Windows 7 is an OS practically made for pirates. Want to display your movies, photos or music on your TV? Bam! Windows Media Player will do that out of the box if you have a Wi-Fi enabled TV, or an Xbox. No extra programs to install: Windows Media Player seamlessly communicates with your Wi-Fi device to display your illegal content in all its glory on your fancy HD TV.

And sharing media is easy, too. Want to download all of your brother's music? Bam! HomeGroup, an easy networking feature included in Windows 7, will make that super easy between computers running the OS. Immediately upon plugging in to your network with Ethernet or Wi-Fi, HomeGroup will ask if you wish to join the group on the network, allowing you to set up easy file sharing in minutes.
Am I alone in thinking that touting ease-of-piracy as a selling point is slightly fucked up???

I can't really see some sense in those arguments, except for improvements in existing functionality.

The communication between your computer and wi-fi TV is not piracy. Illegal copying, downloading and uploading to others, is piracy.

Joining network groups without "extra" software? Been possible for ages with windows :)

Not surprice by this style, considering CNN's new way of doing things. They talk and act like 12 year old kids

Windows xp and currently Media player already do that...

You just need a Xbox... and a playlist in Media player....

And alow the xbox to connect to the pc... (or something like that)

Plus you have also some free software to do what media center does...

I believe you. :) I have never tried to do that, but I do believe you.

What I find hard to believe is that CNN has put an article on it's site that basically laughs at piracy, and tells how easy the new OS makes it to deal with pirated stuff.

I'm not just viewing it with porn slinger's eyes, but when you think about all the money that Hollywood, etc, lose due to piracy, that is kind of akin to cnn publishing an article that says

"Now that you've robbed a bank, check out this awesome software that will help you with your money laundering".

That may admittedly be a stretch as an example, but for me, who is as old as dirt, news media used to have some...

integrity?

I can't imagine Walter Cronkite doing this story. :Oh crap

But as KrisH mentioned, cnn seems to have changed.

Theres pirates in every family. The uncle who used to come to the party empty handed, now brings stacks of discs he burned for everyone.

this might be taken as totally unrelated but...

I remember years back Charter Cable used to broadcast a show on their "Preview Channel" it was a short episode of "The Screen Savers" (Tech TV)

The show was ALL about how and WHERE to download music, movies, games and programs FREE!

Charter then cut in commercial spots in this mini show for their new broadband service.

Long story short, I got a letter from them (Charter) for downloading music and they wanted to shut me off, AND prosecute me, I told them point blank....

I LEARNED IT FROM YOU!

I use my xbox 360 to stream movies and music already with my desktop running XP. Boo yah

L-Pink 08-20-2009 06:14 AM

They should give equal time for stories about how to get free cable.

candyflip 08-20-2009 06:21 AM

Isn't all that was written true all the way back to Windows XP?
