Would you consider yourself an alcoholic if you drink 1 bottle of wine per day?

Hi,

I pretty much drink 75% - 100% of a 750ml wine bottle practically every evening. During the day I never drink.
It doesn't get me drunk or aggressive, but I do feel a little lightheaded. I look forward to drinking wine in the evening and I got so used to it that it discomforts me if there's no wine at hand.

I'm not sure if this is the behavior of an alcoholic, but i'm curious to find out how much you guys drink in a day or evening. Do you consider yourself to have an alcohol problem?

MaDalton 08-23-2009 03:02 PM

every day? yes.

BSleazy 08-23-2009 03:05 PM

It takes a lot less than that to be considered an alcoholic.

i think so

fuzebox 08-23-2009 03:09 PM

I don't open a bottle unless I intend to finish it... I usually limit my wine intake to 2-3 bottles a week though. I wouldn't call it alcoholism, I mean a bottle is only 4 glasses and if you stretch it out over 4 hours you barely even get a buzz :winkwink:

pythonx 08-23-2009 03:09 PM

In countries like France and Spain it's pretty normal wine consumption though :D

Hahhah, nono i'm not justifying it, I know it's a lot. If this is considered alcoholic, i'm not even denying it.
Just curious to see others alcohol consumption.

How long have you been doing this? If you find that you cannot get through the evening comfortably without the wine, that is an indication of beginning dependency on the alcohol for mood support or the ability to relax. If you have been consuming for a period of time, you will find that there is an uneasiness, an unrelaxed and anxious feeling when you do not have the alcohol. The natural instinct in this case is to drink to to settle the nerves and to relax. So you reach for the very thing that is causing your discomfort to begin with. If you stop drinking the alcohol, there will be discomfort for a period of time but it will go away as it is a byproduct of the alcohol use.

This is what makes it difficult for the alcoholic. When you quit, things get better, but you have to endure some uneasiness in the beginning.

Ayla_SquareTurtle 08-23-2009 03:26 PM

Me personally, yes I would absolutely be an alcoholic at that point. I don't think that's the case for everyone though, necessarily.

I think the more important question in a case like this might be: Does this situation cause problems for you in other areas of your life? Since not having wine makes you feel uncomfortable, it seems like there's some potential there for problems, at least. In the end, though, only you know how it truly makes you feel. :2 cents:

lazycash 08-23-2009 03:33 PM

Maybe not alcoholic yet, but definitely on your way. See if you can drink just a glass a night.

u yessssssssssss

This is how the American Medical Association defines alcoholism: "a primary, chronic disease characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking".
We all know that a glass of wine/day is good for our health, so what matters 2 glasses+ ?
You're not an alcoholic, as long as you ask yourself these questions. Alcoholism also comes with denial - most of them will say after drinking "Me? Drunk? No way, I didn't drink at all!"
When you will be drunk in a reasonable % of a 24hours day, then you will be one; when the alcohol will start affecting you brain & thinking. Have you all had to deal with an alcoholic and study his/her behavior? The alcoholics are lost, they are living in their own world.
If drinking 2 beers or having 3 glasses of wine each day makes you feel 'better', then just live & enjoy your life. So no worries, pythonx! Enjoy your wine and have a good sleep :) !
And a note: I'm not telling all this in my defense or something like that, as I don't drink, only during the weekends & @ parties - a beer/maybe two.

brassmonkey 08-23-2009 04:05 PM

stop for a day and u will find out do your hands shake

HerPimp 08-23-2009 04:06 PM

A nice hazey wine feeling before bed is perfect for nice comfy sleep. Alcoholic is bullshit, just be responsible.

Agent 488 08-23-2009 04:06 PM

man up and don't be a pussy.

Joe King 08-23-2009 04:09 PM

I smoke weed fron the time I wake up till the time I go to sleep. I usually begin drinking around 3 pm. I prefer white wine or cold sake in the summer.

So what if you are an acloholic? If it makes you happy then do it.

epitome 08-23-2009 04:48 PM

Yes.

Also, the "I only do it in the evenings" is only a way to make it OK in your head.

I've been sober from drugs for seven years, but my addiction started raging when I was "only doing them on the weekends."

F-U-Jimmy 08-23-2009 04:52 PM

The defining action is do you have to drink one bottle a day. If you are unable to go one day or more without wine or alcohol of some type then you have a problem.

That's just the thing...it's usually masking something. An addict needs to figure out what makes them happy without a substance.

I drink three to four times a year. I would consider that recreational. I asked one of my doctor's if when they ask "do you drink" if my answer would be yes or no. He said the answer would be no because it is not a regular part of my life. If I drank once or twice a month, then the answer would be yes.

WiredGuy 08-23-2009 04:53 PM

Every day 1 bottle is a little too much. 1 bottle 2-3 times a week is ok though.

just make sure its red wine, then you can say its for detox purposes :)

ez.. if you *need* alcohole to function properly, then you have a problem.
..if you can stay abstinent a few days without thinking 'bout beer or wine or whatever, then it's all good. -simple as that.

if you're at a point where you look forward to drinking wine in the evening.. well, then i think you should really try to stay clean for, say, 10 days or so and see what happens.

PlugRush Sascha 08-23-2009 06:03 PM

Yes, you're an alcoholic.

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 08-23-2009 06:05 PM

I've been doing this for 1.5 years or so, as a strong love for the taste of wine. I gotta say, I don't feel any desire to drink something else. If I had vodka/beer/rhum at home and no wine available, i wouldnt feel desire to drink that. That's why I think it's not a dependency on alcohol, but more a depency on the taste and relaxing comfort of wine.
I'm not trying to make excuses, 1 bottle of wine in one evening is a lot and makes me worry.

Without wine, I feel discomfort, but it's not like my hands start shaking without it. It's not a physical dependancy (yet), but more a mental dependency, which I think is similar to heavy weed users. Weed is not physically addicting.
Alcohol however, can be become physically addicting, and that is what I'm worried about. I want to keep enjoying quality wine, but I don't want to become physically dependant on it...

LiveDose 08-23-2009 06:20 PM

Technically yes but hey if that's your thing enjoy.

In other countries it is normal to drink that much in an evening. If you feel fine with it than fuck it.
