Wordpress MU

Anyone using wpmu with domain mapping to manage multiple domains/sites? Do all the popular plugins work like Akismet, All-in-one SEO, etc...?

gwidomains 08-24-2009 05:07 PM

I think they need to be designed for mu. You around on icq?

fris 08-24-2009 05:13 PM

havent messed with wpmu

Brujah 08-24-2009 05:17 PM

I'll post my experiences once I mess around with it. So far, the domain mapping works well. Instead of 20+ individual blogs, you just "update" the single installation of wordpress-mu.

fris 08-24-2009 05:18 PM

did you have to do some weird htaccess stuff? or is it built in

I myself am intrigued by MU so looking forward to how your experiences turn out. Seems like it would make things a lot easier in terms of systematizing blog creation and their upkeep.

No, didn't need to do anything to .htaccess. Just needed to setup domain aliases with the host. I'm using the domain mapping plugin, from the main programmer of wpmu.

I am not a fan of it at all.

Once you get 1 blog with some decent traffic and not just some 'tossaway' I think you will regret the fact it runs off MU as opposed to its own fresh install, one you can tweak and fuck with and make unique. It will be hard to maintain crispness and response by running a few 'good' blogs off the same install.

Now on one domain, its a different story, I love it.

smutnut 08-24-2009 05:58 PM

I couldn't install this properly over a year ago when I first tried, but I was told it manages all your blogs!

Also I heard we are going to have no choice about using it very soon

I tried it over a year ago and wasn't a fan. The latest version is practically the same as Wordpress 2.8.4 though in most respects. Much nicer.

what's your exact question? Most plugins work (it's still WP), domain mapping works as long as it's done right. WPMU is one of the finest pieces of software ever made, at least for free. If you count the features and possibilities, there's almost no reason to use the single WP install, unless you're planning to concentrate on just one blog. Now, if you're working with the idea of a network (now or in the future), there's nothing that comes close to WPMU. Every time I see people bitching for having to upgrade 100 blogs (with backups and everything) I just smirk, the answer is as easy as "Use WPMU. It's done EXACTLY FOR THAT REASON!!!!" :thumbsup

Brujah 08-24-2009 06:13 PM

Oh, don't be mean harvey. I think my question was pretty 'exact.'

Do all the popular plugins work like Akismet? All in one SEO? I'm hoping someone who replies will mention the plugins they are using that work just fine.

shermo 08-24-2009 06:24 PM

The domain mapping plugin looks shit hot, and is exactly what I was wondering about. I'd like to give MU a shot, but only if I can use the software across multiple domains, as opposed to just subdomains of 1.

Please let me know how this works for you! I too, am waiting to hear a bit more feedback.

docputer 08-24-2009 06:47 PM

The only one that I know does not work is the google sitemap plugin. I use All in one seo, technotags, lazyblog, akismet, feedwordpress, firestats, adhesive, central ping list, maxbannerads(though they say wpmu is not supported), samsarin php widget, wp security scan, statpress and wp-stats. I don't run all those stat packages on one install, I am comparing right now to see which is kindest to cpu and memory.

Brujah 08-24-2009 06:51 PM

docputer, thanks for that list! Did you like firestats better than wp-stats?

docputer 08-24-2009 06:57 PM

I do, I am using the paid version of it, which is the same as the free, except it tracks people that use your rss feeds

I wasn't trying to be mean, really didn't understand what did you want to know other than plugins. If it plugins only, all of those that I tried worked, exception made of those that weren't updated for regular WP install. Didn't test the new WPMU version, but it's my understanding that as long as they work with single WP install they'll work for WPMU. At least, that's what happened with every single plugin I tried

@docputer

yes, Google XML sitemap needs some tweak to work with WPMU due to the nature of the plugin. Read these instructions to make it work with all your blogs :)

Note: there's a simpler solution for it, but I really didn't test it, so use it at your own risk

harvey 08-24-2009 08:04 PM

on a side note: check this page for all info about WPMU plugins

ungratefulninja 08-24-2009 08:34 PM

Do they stay on top of updates to WPMU when WP updates?

I used to use it and liked it but worried a bit about security when there was a lag between the WPMU getting updated and when WP released a patch to fix whatever the latest exploit was.

docputer 08-25-2009 01:49 AM

recently they have been updating often. 2.8.4 came out within a few days on both WP and WPMU
