Anyone using any online storage websites?

I want to start using an online storage website as a back up for my data and image files...any recommendations?

I am also using an external hard drive and burning a copy on cd.

Barefootsies 08-26-2009 07:13 PM

Nope. I do not use them.

I have, however, begun to see a ton of advertisements on TV for them.

I have a gmail account I use as 'online storage'.. small files of course

qxm 08-26-2009 07:19 PM

In my case it wouldn't be worth it... I only reach 1 mbps upstream with my current connection... can't imagine upping 20 gigs to that back up server....

Could be worth it for someone with sexy up speeds...

Are you using it? or you just think it is good?

The concept is great, but I also have security concerns. It is like giving someone the keys to your house. I can always make a 3rd copy and leave it at a friends house, but then it starts to be a lot of work. Someone on here must be using one of these services.

Between 1 and 2 TB and will just be moving new data in weekly. Just getting tired of cd's everywhere, I guess a dvd burner would come in handy.

Dirty Dane 08-26-2009 07:48 PM

Well, you could use an USB key and leave it somewhere. You mean GB, not TB, right? No matter what you do, you should encrypt the data, if you have security concerns.

I hear you, just looking for a 3rd back up option. I am sure these websites will be a target for hackers, but photos of my family and Japanese girls they will find. :1orglaugh

i keep important backups on disks that stay in safety deposit box. i also have a server that i use for just backups. i am sure that some 3rd party company may be cheaper but i would be surprised if it was. technically i need next to no bandwidth, nor do i need a high quality box. i have damn near unlimited storage. i do not need to trust some 2nd party or even 3rd party as some may not be actual hosts and just a front company. i just need to trust my hosting company. also have piece of mind that the hosting company does backups of the server too.
i also offer this backup service to all my family and a few friends. they each pay me a few bucks so for me it is damn cheap. though i am sure mozy or whatever has a better interface. i just help set up friends and family with the ftp program, set it to sync up and presto.

Do you recommend using windows xp sharing and security, or do you have another method?

No, that won't help much. You need to encrypt the data. If it is very sensitive data, you can find a free encryption software, like Truecrypt. Otherwise just zip it encrypted with a good password. Even on your own computer it is a good idea to encrypt sensitive data.

www.securebackupprovider.com - the first 2GB are free and after that unlimited backup is less than $5 per month.

ztik 08-26-2009 09:30 PM

this is what I use to store my 3 terabytes of bluray movies.. oops I mean 5 gigs of backup data for work http://www.drobo.com/

That will be great when you upload everything and the place goes out of biz.

Anybody use carbonite.com? Heard the most about that one in the past...

sleazybunny 08-27-2009 01:50 AM

www.syncplicity.com

or

www.humyo.com

I use the first one because of the cool auto sync feature. Might not have enough storage for you, but it's a good starting point.

Other option is get your own remote server somewhere and back up to there.
:2 cents:

I.

I use mozy
First 2 GB Free
Unlimited = $4/95/month
Very nice software. Windows and mac only though - no linux client yet.

Just in case "the man" busts into your house, where can your files be safe?

Offshore bulletproof hosting account.
