online backup solution for your local computer harddisk data?
currently I backup the data I have on my hard disk by copying it to other hard disks.
1 hard disk is kept in the closet at home, the other one at the office. I want an online backup as well. the disadvantage of having a backup online is that someone else has access to it, e.g: the server administrator. the best solution I have for that is to archive the data (.zip, .tar etc.) and password protect the archive file. is this a good idea? who knows a good online backup service ? is it a good idea to upload such a protected archive to sites like RapidShare ? |
if you want all your personal data spread around the internet, then RapidShare is the perfect place
Use something like www.keepit.com (you can even promote them through CJ.com) wikipedia even have a list of them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ackup_services |
www.securebackupprovider.com - 2GB free or upgrade to unlimited for only $4.95!

Most online backup services (as opposed to just providing online storage) should have a client which supports encryption.
Do you have your own server? You could always add an extra HD dedicated to backups. :2 cents: |

Passwords on zip files are easily cracked by your typical clueless script kiddie.
I'm glad you asked about this, because as others have said putting it on Rapidshare as a zip with a password would have been a really bad idea. I would also highly suggest NOT putting the backup of your desktop computer on a porn site server. They are of course big targets for crackers and we talk to people every week whose servers have been hacked. Maybe, just maybe if you had a really secure server from Swiftwill with no PHP installed on the box running a very simple low traffic site, it might not be horrible to put an encrypted backup on there, but in no case would I EVER put personal data and PHP on the same box, we don't even put them on the same NETWORK. As a companion to our Clonebox enterprise server backup and replication, one of our partner companies is offering an online backup for your Windows desktop which is free and is currently in beta. If you want to try OrionSync, here's the sign up page and download: http://skyruscor.com/?op=orion http://bettercgi.com/tmp/orion_1.0.0.2.zip |

If you want your data stores somewhere through the internet, it should be accessed through a encrypted VPN connection, and stored encrypted as well. The best you can doo, is look for a IBM Tivoli bases system(or similar), and make sure is a certified IBM partner, not just a freelance joe |
