AMD Phenom X4 or Intel Quad Core?

I have been reading toms hardware reviews and it looks as if the Phenom is blowing the Intel chips away in benchmarks...

any feedback on this? which one would you get? AMD Phanom or Intel?

thx

sandman! 09-04-2009 11:58 PM

for the average user there will be no noticeable difference.

i would recommend the AMD

H-Tom 09-05-2009 12:01 AM

AMD all the way! :)

Cyandin 09-05-2009 12:18 AM

I suspect you'll find the benchmarks and price point of building an i7 based system (intel) to dramatically outperforms AMD's class competitors.

That said, I was an avid AMD fan from the 800mhz (Duron or Tbird, cant remember) through the Athlon XP 3000 64-bit, which ran like a champ for me for almost 4 years.

Machete_ 09-05-2009 12:42 AM

You get better performance with the Intel I7 chip, but it also cost more.
Unless you REALLY need the performance, I would go with the AMD and spend a little more on getting a really good motherboard, good disk and extra Ram

Mr Pheer 09-05-2009 12:43 AM

I have the i7, and no complaints.

tomud 09-05-2009 01:26 AM

AMD X4 :pimp

Tomud

Go with X4 can be overclocked over 4 Ghz using some quality water cooling

I would go with AMD :thumbsup

Voodoo 09-05-2009 02:47 AM

Gooooooooo Intel!!

Pretty sure it was Duron;)

I have been using AMD for years now unless your really into gaming I wouldn't expect you to notice a great deal of diff between the two processors. I have around 5 systems atm all running AMD and wouldn't use anything else.

woj 09-05-2009 08:30 AM

AMD = best value

if you really need performance get i7

yys 09-05-2009 09:01 AM

I think the new core i5's come out next week so the prices on the quad cores will probably be coming down.

I went with an i7 in my new system. I think i'm going to add an intel ssd; tried a friends system out with one and it's a whole different ball game.

bronco67 09-05-2009 10:05 AM

This is news to me...

Intel has owned AMD in a big way for the last several years.

Ok, WTF are you talking about? Even the low end i7920(which can overclok to the high end) is faster than this AMDx4.

get an i7. Its the fastest chip.

bbobby86 09-05-2009 10:20 AM

always Intel...

born2blog 09-05-2009 10:23 AM

you definitely want to go with the AMD chip

Machete_ 09-05-2009 10:26 AM

you can see one of the latest CPU tests here
http://techreport.com/articles.x/17402/3

Intel beats it - and on the workrelates tests, intel is really ahead. When it comes to image processing, its at least 30% ahead.

This is a score based on a full system, not just the CPU alone, So this is what you actually GET and not just some theory bullshit

Check the list of some sugested builds with both chips here in their 2009 Intel and AMD system guide

TheSenator 09-05-2009 10:27 AM

I got the i7 920 because I can overclock it easily on an ASUS P6T.

I would have rather gotten an AMD but the bench marks at the time for video encoding was low.

bronco67 09-05-2009 10:29 AM

Can anyone explain why they would advise to get an AMD, other than you think the name is cool?

Machete_ 09-05-2009 10:32 AM

good price/bang for the bucks graph here http://techreport.com/articles.x/17402/13

sure, I just built a new upgraded computer a couple months ago. I decided to go with phenom II. it was a price performance thing.
the i7's have better encoding performance, but at a higher price. not only the cpu price, but the ddr3 prices, and motherboard prices. the latter will fall over time for sure.
i'm satisfied with what i got for the prices. IIRC i went with some stable low latency memory, lower frequency memory over slightly faster mhz with heating stability and price downsides.
off the top of my head my motherboard cpu memory combo was probably 40% cheaper than a typical stable i7 build. like by that i mean a good asrock (an asus subdivision) motherboard and not ecs junk.
but, buy whatever suits you, just keep in mind in a few months the price has dropped and it is not nearly the fastest anymore.

Well if u are looking for a good price the AMD Phenom Quad core is a sure winner but if u don't mind shelling out a few hundreds then i7 is the way to go.

I have an AMD Phenom X4 in this machine and is running smoooth as hell..... not to mention that it blows out of the water my previous cpu when it comes to video encoding time

Klen 09-05-2009 01:44 PM

Intel all the way

NetHorse 09-05-2009 01:46 PM

I have a 486/SX/25mhz, IMO anything more is unnecessary. :2 cents:

tiger 09-05-2009 04:06 PM

LOL, what benchmarks are you talking about. I think you misread something. Intel Quad cores in most benchmarks will beat AMD and i7 chips absolutely blow AMD out of the water. Not to mention power consumption.

Get a Intel Quad Core or if you have the money an i7 system.

The new i5's and i7's were released today. Looks like Intel laid the hammer down on AMD.

I love the tech war between these 2 companies, shit has been awesome for us consumers in the past year or so ... I hope they keep it up..... can't wait to have a 32 core processor at my disposal :P

Ravage 09-08-2009 11:20 AM

Not much more to add but to state as well that you should go with the Intel chip.

AMD chips are fine and perform well, but comparatively, Intel has dominated AMD since the first C2D was released.
AMD has continually played catch-up ever since and they tend to cut corners on chip design, typically regarding to memory, to try and release competive chips. Phoenom X3's anyone?

Lace 09-08-2009 11:47 AM

I've got the AMD Phenom 9650 Quadcore and love it! Running on 4 gigs of ram, it generally runs anything and everything I throw at it.
