Best place to base yourself in europe as an english speaker?

I recently visited London and I must say, its a lovely town but its too expensive and packed with ugly people.

Wheres the best city in Europe to LIVE where you can get away with speaking english most of the time, the living costs are low (so you can live quite well), the scenery is beautiful, the women are beautiful and the crimes not too bad?

camchoice 09-08-2009 11:25 PM

Amsterdam, but pretty expensive.

darksoul 09-08-2009 11:25 PM

I would've said Netherlands but I guess they're expensive as well.
Try some eastern countries like Romania.

Many English speakers in Romania?

96ukssob 09-08-2009 11:52 PM

Italy

most of them know how to speak english there and Rome is full of hot chicks

borked 09-09-2009 12:01 AM

Just learn another language - believe me, if you make the effort the hot chicks will come flocking.

And speaking from personal experience, French chicks can't get enough of a Brit speaking French. Far more pulling power than a Brit speaking English.

Alas, pulling days are long over, but it doesn't mean I'm not allowed to still look at the menu from time to time.

try Prague

english speakers would be too much to say, but everyone under 35 understands english and can give some directions. The accent sucks but you get used with it :)

Dirty Dane 09-09-2009 01:25 AM

Berlin. .

Nicky 09-09-2009 01:35 AM

Gothenburg(Sweden) or Amsterdam for sure, but living expenses are a bit high. If you want cheap living you probably will need to check out Prague or some other more eastern europe city/country

quantum-x 09-09-2009 01:37 AM

What borked said.
Learning a language isn't *that* hard to get the basics.

Not to mention, being bi/tri/multilingual is an excellent asset.

No way. I had so much trouble communicating in english in berlin its not even funny...

Vendot 09-09-2009 01:42 AM

Holy fuck, Berlin is a kick ass city...... but sadly not that many people speak english there and the winters are ferocious.

I would suggest Cyprus, weather is fantastic year round, not too expensive, women are hot and because it was a british colony over 75% of people speak english.

Adraco 09-09-2009 03:40 AM

Cyprus works, so does Stockholm, Sweden too. In Sweden they don't dub movies, so you will always hear the original actors voices with subtitles below. Larger European countries put in their own voice-actors making it hard for an English speaker to follow along as there are no English sub-titles for the most part. The same goes for movies on television and american sitcoms. In most mid-large European cities you can get English newspapers, either flown in from London early morning or as reprints from a local press.

In Sweden, Denmark and Norway people know that they live in a small country, speaking a small language. So they all learn English from a young age. Most will be at least decent speakers, but don't expect too many "high-level" discussions.

I live in Malta. Its cheap, everyone speaks English, its hot as hell in summer, scenery is ok nothing special, chicks are hot plus you get tons of Italian, Spanish, French and German girls coming over to learn English and study here. Crime is very low, its the lowest crime rate in Europe I think, I haven't personally saw one bit of crime/violence in the 12 weeks I've been here, some guys I party with have been here 2 years and love it.

Something for you to think over.

First time I've heard that and I'm from Europe and know plenty of people that went to Italy...

Latin country's (Portugal, Spain, Italy) can be known for many things but having the majority or even a big proportion of people there speaking English is certainly not one of them :winkwink:

huda 09-09-2009 05:55 AM

Any big city in Eastern Europe, learn the language and enjoy the ladies

Germany or Holland

Jakke PNG 09-09-2009 07:54 AM

Europe is more expensive overall than US, (western europe + scandinavia atleast).

French, spanish and italians don't speak english in smaller towns. *I* personally plan to move into a small village somewhere south within 20 years :1orglaugh (and learn the language btw)

Okay so does anyone have any good suggestions for Eastern Europe? Obviously Moscow and Kiev are quite expensive compared to the smaller cities, but possibly worth it?

Yeah i'll have to check out Prague (even though i'm aware Czech Rep is more central).. whats the cost of living there like?

directfiesta 09-09-2009 09:27 PM

London ...
