Do you lose respect for bad spellers?

I do.

If you can't read and write, you're a worthless piece of shit.

tetsuo001100 09-10-2009 02:37 PM

werd up! ;)

BestXXXPorn 09-10-2009 02:47 PM

Depends on the context ... If it's in a forum and can easily be contributed to a typo, then no... Or if English is a second language for someone... definitely not...

However if it's not a typo (e.g. your/you're, their/there, etc...) Then well, you've had quite a few years to master the English language so either you just don't get it after all these years or you don't care and you're lazy.

Spelling wise, every browser now a days has a built in spell check it's just lazy if you don't bother correcting what you wrote...

I guess it comes down to the fact that I lose respect for lazy people :P

Yngwie 09-10-2009 02:48 PM

it all depends on how bad their spelling is. If it's a few small mistakes or English is not their main language it's not a big deal, but if almost every word that they type is spelled wrong that, in my opinion, makes them look dumb. Of course, I give people the benefit of the doubt. I wouldn't say that they are worthless though.

J. Falcon 09-10-2009 02:50 PM

I do. Not simply because they are not smart enough to spell correctly, but mostly due to the fact that they are too fucking lazy to do so.

If you see poor spelling in content on a website, you tend to trust that website less because it doesnt say a good thing about the management.

:2 cents:

I sometimes type too fast for my own good so typos can happen, and even the mistake here and there from a non-English speaker is of course okay (though sometimes the grammar mistakes get a little much). I get fumed when people type shit like "loose" instead of lose or "to" instead of "too"...I just want to beat them over the head with a dictionary.

C-Luv 09-10-2009 03:07 PM

I am a bad speller... doesn't mean I am lazy or retard.

I have a Learning Disabilities, unfortunately I can't spell I have horrible grammar but you know what.... Thank god for spell check!

I struggled all through school but I worked harder than most people and graduated top of my class, finished high school early and went to Purdue University. : )

Because of my Learning Disabilities I have to read my email twice and sometime I do not catch everything. It sucks. I am smart.... But on paper it may not appear that way.

Its a struggle but I have learned to get through it!

Cyber Fucker 09-10-2009 03:08 PM

I can read and write 100% correctly in my native language, is this count? :glugglug

Yep... Someone's spelling and grammar on even a forum like this one says a lot about their attitude towards communication :2 cents:

czarina 09-10-2009 03:14 PM

not at all
I understand the fact that some people have trouble spelling, plus working online you run into lots of them who are from other countries so their spelling or grammar are not the best. You gotta keep an open mind, and not judge lightly

I'm GUILTY of the above ALL THE TIME, and it's not that "I don't get it" or that "I've never mastered the English language" I just tend to type too fast, and don't pay a whole lot of attention lol.

And when you use the wrong spelling of a word Spell-check doesn't catch it, cause although it might be the wrong word, it's STILL spelled correctly.

I don't consider myself lazy, and I don't judge anyone by the way they type... some people just can't express themselves via text as well as they can via voice.

My biggest problem, I hardly EVER use punctuation correctly lol

Killswitch - BANNED FOR LIFE 09-10-2009 03:23 PM

Lose respect? No. Think they should learn to either spell properly or use spell check? Yes.

xxxfeetxxx 09-10-2009 03:24 PM

On a forum it's not so much of an issue, although I do notice poor spelling and grammar. On a website, it's a different matter. Mistakes there make the site look unprofessional and I'm sure affects the probability that a surfer will sign up to that site. If English isn't your first language, or you struggle with the intricacies of the language, it's probably a good idea to get someone to go over it with you and check it reads well.

Jim_Gunn 09-10-2009 03:27 PM

It's pretty shocking to me just how bad a lot of native English speakers are with spelling and grammar. It does make me think a little less of them to a degree, but I try not to let that form the majority of my opinion about someone, especially since a lot of these native speakers with bad grammar and horrible spelling are very successful in spite of their language deficiencies. For example, I remember in the early days how many of the scene synopses on BangBus.com were horribly mis-spelled. Maybe they still are. And look at all the people who say "would of", "could of" and "should of" right here in the forum- some of them are probably millionaires.

_Richard_ 09-10-2009 03:33 PM

only if they obviously can't spell..

Machete_ 09-10-2009 03:38 PM

Richard Branson, Leonardo da Vinci, Erin Brockovich, William Hewlett, Walt Disney, George Patton, Tommy Hilfiger, Hans Christian Andersen, Jørn Utzon, Fred Epstein, Thomas Jefferson, Henry Ford, Nelson Rockefeller, Agatha Christie, George Washington

Non of them could spell. They were either dyslexic or traits associated with learning styles. And I am pretty sure all of them are very much smarter and more successful then you will ever be.

If you think less of people because their spelling is bad, its really YOU who are the bigger fool.

My reading comprehension is great, but I can't spell for shit! lol

No matter how hard I have tried I can not spell. I was tested in school a long time ago. I was reading 4 levels ahead but spelling and writing a level behind. No one really understood it. They just chalked it up to a learning disability... :Oh crap

I wouldn't say lose respect, but I definitely think of their idiocracy. What really gets to me is the abbreviations, misuse or misspelling (ie. cuz or cause instead of because), people who can't cap the first word of a sentence, big blocks of text because they can't grasp the concept of a paragraph, poor punctuation, sentence structure, etc.

I could go on and on, but what is the point. It is all just another defining characteristic towards the road to "Idiocracy".

Although rarely, I too am guilty of the above from time to time.

In a construction business, one of the best employees I had was the worst speller I have ever seen.
He could not spell at all, but all his work was concise and exactly as required. When I made him a supervisor, I hired a secretary for him, he dictated his reports and she typed them up for submission to the client.

Grammar and spelling police are the worst people on earth. Especially when they have to resort to correcting those mistakes during a heated argument because they have no other comebacks.

Almost a perfect sentence.
I do miss the "but" between "No," and "I".
Or you could use a ". " after the "No" which would start a new sentence.

this one is tricky for myself. sure some have noticed that i have not been capitalizing letters almost at all. i may also use some slang and or silly abbreviations. i also have been prone to a few spelling errors on this site with my posts.

The simple reason behind this is that I am visiting this site via my PDA while I am doing other things. I have only posted on here once of twice from an actual full sized keyboard. As you can see I could be typing in a normal fashion. It just is a pain in the ass on this tiny touch screen keyboard and my fingers.

so do expect to see me typing this way and i may occasionally make some spelling errors as well. i am often typing to fast to allow the word suggestion to select for me and i do not spell check before i post.

Loryn 09-10-2009 04:51 PM
