5 Hong Kong workers die in elevator shaft fall

HONG KONG ? A construction platform inside an elevator shaft collapsed Sunday, sending five workers falling 20 stories to their deaths inside a Hong Kong skyscraper, officials and state media said. Another worker was injured.

The accident occurred at the International Commerce Center, which will be 118 stories high when completed next year, making it one of the world's tallest buildings and the highest in Hong Kong.

Speaking at the scene in the Kowloon district, Hong Kong leader Donald Tsang said the men fell after the platform they were working on collapsed in the elevator shaft.

Five workers died, police spokeswoman Anne Lam said. Another man was believed to be receiving treatment at the site.

Police could not confirm a report on the Web site of government-owned radio station RTHK that the workers fell from the 30th floor to the 10th floor.

The building's developer, major Hong Kong property company Sun Hung Kai, has agreed to pay each of the victims' families 1 million Hong Kong dollars ($128,000) on top of normal compensation payments, Hong Kong Labor Secretary Matthew Cheung told local media.

What a horrible way to go. I wonder if 20 stories is enough to have your life flash before your eyes

200 Feet is the exact length of a regulation hockey rink (Olympic and North American Professional) (lengthwise).

So not sure how long you would have falling that far, likely only a couple seconds at most.

i bet they have a film

Even at terminal velocity falling 200 feet will take 6 seconds...

Ok, I worked installing elevators for 7 1/2 years, I worked for Otis, US Elevators and a couple other companies in downtown LA . I worked off the temporary skips all the time and they can be scary. You're wearing a safety belt the whole time. I had one give way when we we're taking it apart, I was hanging upsidedown 30 floors up because of my apprentice. Shit happens, but you take precautions. Escalators scare me, they we're shooting a safety video on one and they took out a couple steps and let it run, the guy wasn't paying attention, slip in the between the two missing steps and lost his legs at the knee cap, all on video.
