google aquires reCAPTCHA

You know those boxes with funky looking letters that are becoming increasingly common on website registration forms, or on Facebook Pages when you want to post an update? They?re called captchas and they?re used primarily to deter spammers and bots.

One of the biggest providers of the technology is a company called reCAPTCHA, and now, Google owns them. The search giant just announced on their blog that they?re buying reCAPTCHA, which is used on more than 100,000 websites worldwide

The concept behind reCAPTCHA is rather interesting, as the article briefly mentions.

One of the two words in the captcha is known, the other is a scan from a book or article. If one is entered correctly, the other is also assumed as entered correctly and the entry is used to aid in the digitizing of the scanned documents.

Many of you may have already known this, I find this to be interesting utilization beyond just the security aspects of the CAPTCHA.

Same here, I thought it was very clever when I learned about that application. Of course, they're still being sued (or will be) for copyright violation if they ever publish the scanned books, but all the words will be known. :upsidedow

Some of the "unknown" recaptcha words can be hard to figure out because there's no leading or trailing context... it's just a mystery word sitting there by itself.

Wasn't recaptcha a university research thing? Now it's been acquired and run as a commercial op by one of the nets most influentual corps. Hmmm.

All those 100,000 sites now have clandestine analytics portals on them. Don't forget the data you submitted when you created an account. More fodder for Google to munch on.

Captchas are a great spot for ads 'cos you know people are paying attention.

No, what he said was right on. The Big G already watches every move it possibly can online, hopefully at some point some decent competition for it will step up and knock it down a few notches.

That is awesome!
It's always great when any sort of technology allows for double ( in this case, sorta triple or quadruple )usage of user time.
And especially nice since the thing they are using it for is such a nice thing to have added to the online/digital world.

TheDA 09-16-2009 03:41 PM

there is no money in captcha

qxm 09-16-2009 03:49 PM

hopefully Google will not fuck with recaptcha as much as they fuck their own captchas I mean the other day I was trying to make gmail and I couldn't figure out for the life of me what the fuck that Google captcha said..... Now if I compare that to recaptcha... the latter is a breeze .. .and it even gives you several choices whereas google's captcha is one strike and u have to start again ... :(
