Anyone else sponsoring a family for Christmas?
Finally after years of exchanging presents with all my brothers and sisters-in-laws we're doing something different. It took two years of arguing at Thanksgiving but this year instead of buying gifts for one another we're going buy gifts for a family. We're doing this through the local Children's hospital... It was pretty simple, we came up with an amount that we agreed to spend and they picked a family for us. We're doing Christmas gifts for a family of 5 kids ages 5-18. Their mother passed away 6 months ago, father is absent and they're living with their grandmother who is elderly and on a fixed income.
I know this seems sappy and sentimental. However, in my family everyone already has everything they could ever possibly want or need. We're a lucky bunch. That made this a simple decision for us but it still took us a while to get everyone to go along with it. Perhaps a few of y'all will be inspired to help some seniors or families in need this Holiday season. Cheers, Brad |

cool idea..
the company I worked for last year brought one of those christmas trees with namecards and ages in and we all bought something for the kids. I sponsor a kid too. |
We do the Empty Stocking Fund here. A local civic organization that I am a member of raises money by selling trees, and through donations and then we go out and buy toys and then deliver them to the kids. If you have never handed a child who was expecting nothing a present and seen thier face light up then you are really missing out.

personally I like to be more discrete about it, whenever I see a salvation army money collector I drop between $20-$100 into the bin. Some days i do that several times. I know they do a lot of good work at x-mas time as well as all year round with the poor. |
your a good guy SinEmpire :thumbsup

Awwww, what a wonderful idea. I'll defintely try to remember to suggest this next year at Thanksgiving! Just today when I was at Gold's Gym I saw their Christmas tree and it had little cards on it, each one had the following written on it: male or female, age, and christmas present request. (You're supposed to pick up a card, buy the item requested, and bring it back to the tree) The things listed on the cards were so sad....underwear, socks...just bare bare essentials :( You've gotta feel so sorry for those kids. I want to shove a Game Boy Advance in with the underwear or something, lol :)

It's definitely the thought that counts.. whether it's $5 or $5000 it's all good. I aspire to someday be a really good philanthropist I guess I'm just getting my feet wet now. One thing is for sure, my wife helps to make me a better and more thoughtful person then I ever would have made time for when I was single.
One thing that always worried me about giving to the salvation army and 'lone' people at intersections and grocery stores is wondering how much if any of that actually makes it back. Unfortunately, every year around this time the scammers come out of the woodwork to take advantage of the holiday spirit some of us get. Cheers, Brad |
Good on ya Brad:thumbsup
