Guy on CNBC says porn spending down 40%

I was watching CNBC today and they were interviewing a guy that wrote a book who studied peoples happiness and spending habits from the last 10 years or so.

He had an index for the spending of this and that..one of them he called the "sex index" ; that was how much people were spending on pornography and/ strip clubs etc and he said this year that was down 40%.

I always thought that porn was one of those things that survived in a bad economy? I was always under the assumption that porn was lumped in w/ alcohol and cigs??

Yes but its more than just economy for the adult entertainment industry and especially with technology....

Whoever told you that is probably out of business already.

It's not just a bad economy. There is way more to it than that.

If porn spending went down that much, the surfers must have turned to torrent and tubes.
It's only reasonable to switch from something that costs you to a free substitute. :2 cents:

To lump porn in with strip clubs is a pretty big difference though.

You can jump online and get a trail membership to a site for a few dollars or buy a full monthly membership for around $30-$40. You will blow through that at a strip club just paying the cover charge and the drink minimums.

I notice when the economy is about to swing there is a downswing in my traffic that follows the trademarkets curves. At least based on comparitive data from previous years. Porns pretty much what people spend on after they got their main shit together. 2009, I'm really happy for you and I'm going to let you finish. But 2007 had one of the best porn days of all time.

Trust me, his number is DAMN RIGHT ! :Oh crap

Anyone that spends money on porn on the internet it a total idiot. I have been in the biz for over 15 years and the generic affiliate sending hits to sponsors has lost 70-80% of his income doing so. I can find EVERY kinky and/or fetish porn absolutely FREE. All the surfers are looking for is something to whack their weenie with...and, it is out there FREE, FREE, FREE.

The only thing in porn that is still strong for me is Phone Sex and Dating sites because that is LIVE interactive...for the surfer that wants to hear a voice and/or meet someone. Those that think there is going to be a revolution in 2-3 years when the economy gets better is really wishfull thinking. The FREE stuff will be more abundent than ever as domain names and server fees decline in cost.

I know...I painted a black picture...but, it really is factual and happening now.

i bet he simply made it up, no company would give him info to research that statistic, the guy is just making shit up and media will run wityh it

the biggest threat to the world economy is a tube site. why can't the world wake up to this simple fact ...

pornguy 09-24-2009 05:17 AM

The slow down we have seen has tooo many points that caused it to list them all, and Im sure you would stll miss some..

One nice thing is, there is always new traffic and new spenders. the trick is getting them

It used to be, before the net, before everything you want can be found free - yes even live cams and phone sex can be found free.
Top it off the internet itself although may be seen as a tool to a few, it is a luxury item to many families. Sort of hard to get to the online porn when your access is gone and you do not have 5 bucks to go buy a coffee and watch it there - not that many would have the balls to do so, sure some will.
Then just most of the younger people really understand how to find free wireless, but they also know how to get everything else free.

I would say those numbers are conservative - maybe down even more than 40%

Barefootsies 09-24-2009 08:52 PM

Some are down more. Some down less. However repeating that fact over and over daily on a message board is not solving your problem.

Agent 488 09-24-2009 08:54 PM

no more than 37.86%

Agreed, recession talk just makes things worse. This is why we got to the level where we are, because people panicked and kept spreading the word recession and freaking more people out. In all, it had a ripple effect, look how much good that effect brought... damn...

Why would he need info from companies?

I'm assuming he surveys consumer spending, not corporate revenue. That also means that even though his absolute numbers may be flawed, his trends are likely to be quite close to the truth.

It probably was a survivor in the past but if you have to make sacrifices its pretty easy to sacrifice something you can get for free on the internet.
