Web host that can email monthly backups?

I'm looking for a web host that can send regular backups to my email or at least store them on a server in a completely different facility somewhere for me to download afterwards (although I really want it emailed to me). I've lost enough years of data recently to realize secure backups are by far the most important thing in online business period. :Oh crap

I only need virtual hosting for now, possibly dedicated in the future once it is needed again. I would go with webair but I have read that their dedicated hosting is where the value is at and not the virtual. So I am basically looking for reliable (ha!) virtual hosting that can be easily upgraded to dedicated later on.

Please don't just spam [X] hosting company because I'll of course be doing some research first and if there is not a lot of [good] information on [X] company available then there is no business available from me lol.

must be some small backups if u want them in email?

it takes only a small php script to zip your files and email or FTP the file. trigger it with a cron.

no special server settings required so any host will do.

I don't know that I've heard of backups being e-mailed to customers. The file size could be quite large and it may clog up your e-mail. You can certainly download a backup file quite easily once a month.

If the site in question is pretty small, it's actually a pretty great idea :thumbsup

Not a tech guy so please no ripping me a new or bigger asshole.

Couldnt someone set up a small dedicated box at home with a protected IP or something. Then the server would tar the backup and copy/upload it to your local machine.

True, no doubt it is not entirely a hosts fault as one should always have their own backups. I'm just trying to make the backup process more easier, so in case someone is getting lazy and not backing things up it will still be there. :1orglaugh

Yes the backup would be very large, most likely many gigs, although I plan to just keep the most recent backups and periodically delete any olds ones using up crucial space in gmail, which allows 7.3gb currently. :pimp

Another great idea, you can easily have a server (like wamp) setup on your computer. I think everyone just really underestimates the importance of a backup, and how easy it is to do..

yea what my PornCMS does is makes a data backup 4 times a day and a full content backup daily, then FTPs the backups to SimpleCDN automatically (optional plugin).

keeping the data separate makes it fast to recover one of those "oops i fucked up and deleted all my models" kinda things.

still, only took me about an hour to script the backup system, so should be fairly easy to set one up yourself. 2 functions: 1. make a zip file, 2. FTP the file to SimpleCDN (or another server). you can even get a cheap HostGator account for the backups.

Good suggestions so far, but i see a problem in ftp'ing your updates to another server. When someone hacks your A-Box he has the ftp login to B-Box too - so if he wants to fuck you - he can - by deleting both your primary data AND your backup ...

More secure solution would be to put the backup tar/zip files in a folder like /backups123/ on A-Box, password protect it by htaccess and downloading it with wget from B-Box. This way, even if one person gets access to A-Box or B-Box he doesn't have a login to the other one (except for the htaccess, but nothing he can do there except downloading the backups...)

They could email you a link to the back up file.

Well the point of having it emailed is to have that copy there separate from your hosting account(s).

Then you would download it.

Unless the site is very very small emailing a zip file is going to be a pisser.

For a small virtual plan that you said you want i would talk to the people at phatservers.:2 cents:

Jakez 10-01-2009 06:00 AM

It's looking like either phatservers or certified/naked hosting right now, although certified's prices seem too good (bad thing lol).

area51 - BANNED FOR LIFE 10-01-2009 06:03 AM

Looks like it's too late on the backup, your sites been down forever anyway

bbobby86 10-01-2009 06:11 AM

Jakez 10-02-2009 05:39 AM

Our virtual plans include daily remote backup service. You can also create your own custom backups through the control panel that you can download as well. It emails you a notice that the backup is ready, but does not currently email the backup file to you. Hit me up if you are still looking and have further questions.
