iPhone?

Is the iPhone really worth the price tag? Not just the phone but the plan required. My wife wants one and while I'd NEVER use all the bells and whistles of it she might. Is there something "better" than the iPhone I should try to push her or is the iPhone the big dick daddy of the market?

fatfoo 10-05-2009 03:35 PM

Don't know. Never used iPhone.

candyflip 10-05-2009 03:37 PM

HTC has a few new phones that were just released on ATT in the past few days.

My girl has the Pre, but already can't wait to grab one of the Android phones once they hit Sprint.

I have an iTouch, got it as a gift. I use it to check my iPhone mobile sites, that is all.

One has the slide out keyboard, the other has a software based touch keyboard.

I'm picking up an HTC Hero when they come out in the next week or two.

friend just told me via icq:

don't
service is bad with iphone
lots of dropped calls
they're expensive
plans are fucking outrageous
you will spend for your data package (which you really won't use) what you pay for home internet
and it's not optional
get a blackberry
and buy an ipod touch for fun
you will be better off
i'm on my 3rd iphone
because it always breaks
random shit
sometimes it will just stop having a signal
and i have to POP OUT THE FUCKING SIM CARD to get it to work again

bdld 10-05-2009 03:50 PM

i used to use phones that had all the bells and whistles and never used those features but with the iphone i find myself spending more time on it. i use the wordpress app to make posts, rss reader, zillow app and a whole bunch of other ones.

candyflip 10-05-2009 03:53 PM

Are you already an ATT customer?

potter 10-05-2009 03:56 PM

One of the best iPhone features. It has a google maps app that it comes with. It can find your current location, and then if you want give you the directions to that location from where you are - and it'll track you live - while you drive to that location. I don't care about getting directions or worrying about where I am anymore. I was downtown in Chicago trying to find good parking for the Taste, opened the app - located me - searched parking - and found one two blocks left. Did this within the span of sitting at a red light.

I have 56 other 3rd party apps installed which make my phone a walking office and personal assistant. Seriously, it pwns all others. It's all about the app store really. The phone itself isn't the "best on the market", the app store and all the apps is what makes it a cut above the rest.

no not yet. I've got a tracphone since I use like 20mins/mo.
Would be a new contract with them so we'd get a big discount on the phone

Any of the HTC WinMo or Android phones have this app and GPS built in too.

Data package is $30 unlimited. My home internet is WAY more than that. :2 cents:

Check Sprint if they're in your area.

They have a nice new plan that's about $35 less than the iPhone plan (min, data, nights and weekend, stuff like that).

You also get unlimited calling to all cellphone numbers on any other carrier.

I used less than 40 of my allotted 500 minutes because everyone I call is on a cellphone.

The phone in the second image comes out on the 11th.

PXN 10-05-2009 04:03 PM

I like Blackberry better, just my preference and you get a package for a s little as 45/mon.

You have some screen grabs? From the ones I've seen, they suck balls in comparison.

Here the iphone screenie. Blue dot is the GPS locator, which will move as you move in real time.

I actually never had problems with my iPhone and I love it!

As for the plan, just get it, and after a month let her cancel the contract. She'll pay extra 175$ for that, but basically will get the phone for around 400$, which it really is worth! Then just unlock and jailbreak it and use whatever you want in it :)

I think it's the best phone for that price on the market atm.

My map page looks identical. Moving blue dot and all.

The info page has the exact same info, just without the iPhone UI.

Dianne22 10-05-2009 05:47 PM

iphone is doing fine for me

Joshua G 10-05-2009 05:55 PM

just buy it if your goal is to jailbreak it. otherwise you are paying 80 a month for dropped calls & no internet access. all the pretty apps cant hide the fact that ATT is a shitty service provider.

CYF 10-05-2009 06:13 PM

I'm a big fan of android phones :thumbsup

candyflip 10-05-2009 06:56 PM

The folks I know who have iPhones love them, but have NOTHING GOOD to say about ATT and their service.

http://www.t-mobile.com/images/produ...ck/250x270.jpg

and yes it has the google maps and you can turn on GPS and has tons and tons of cool free apts for the phone. Was going to go with the my Touch pro but it's the same phone as the G1 but the G1 has touch screen and the full keyboard with 3G

SBJ 10-05-2009 07:57 PM

Ok I was just looking around at phones and this phone looks very promising for the future!

that "gps" is just cell tower based, right? not necessarily super accurate in places you might really need it?

As a techical kind of person, I can tell you:

Pros:
Looking like an asshole
Having a disposable income.
Not needing MMS.
Not needing a functional phone.

Cons:

Not needing MMS.
Not needing a functional phone.

JD 10-06-2009 02:17 AM

god damn it... shit's pretty sweet... guess I'll have one within a few weeks :D

FrozenJag 10-06-2009 05:33 AM

My wife and I just got ours about 3 weeks ago. I'll tell you man, im not a "phone" guy but this 3gs iphone is simply fucking AMAZING. We have the family share plan for 149/mo. Most definetly worth it, especially if you travel whatsoever.

Basically its a work station of its own heh. ICQ has an app aswell thats handy to use. Couple weeks ago I was 30k feet up in the air on an airplane and through the planes wireless I signed onto icq and checked in a few people I do business with and then checked my sites and stats. All from your phone. Pretty amazing IMO.

We switched from verizon to ATT.

Yeah man I totally agree on the google maps thing. My wife and I were out in California for a week and it was a life saver. Never ever had to worry about directions and say you want to find something to eat type in "breakfast" or something like that and boom, it takes you to the closest Denny's in real time. Pretty cool stuff. Within like 1 mintue we could go from totally lost to right on target to where we needed to go.

I normally am like "meh" about phones but its really sweet the iphone is.

DustinLDJ 10-06-2009 05:37 AM

I love my iPhone. The apps, especially the maps are the major selling point. AT&T sucks though.

Ross 10-06-2009 06:14 AM

I have the iPhone and would never change it. I believe tho that the UK call plans are much better than USA. We get unlimted free 3G with outs. So no expensive data to pay for, just surf for as much as you want on 3G or wireless.

Dailydiapers 10-06-2009 06:18 AM

I use my iPhone every day. Best phone I have ever had. Especially love the app store for constant new features (loving the new barcode scanner!)

$30 is reasonable for unlimited data use. Haven't had any dropped call issues.

Knew that would happen. My GF became obsessed with mine once I got one. I had to give her my iTouch just to calm her down. She is still going to make the switch to the iPhone once her current plan is up.

Scott McD 10-06-2009 08:43 AM

I've been going to buy an iPhone for weeks now, but i always read something (usually on here) that puts me off a little.

So, i'm still undecided basically...

Babaganoosh 10-06-2009 08:46 AM

TROOF! Blackberry + Ipod Touch will stomp the shit out of an iphone. I love my Blackberry and I like my ipod.

why dont you get the iphone and give us your own review. if your buddy has broken 3 iphones he not taking care of them. With a blackberry you still are REQUIRED to get a data plan. my verizon BB curve bill was 115 a month, 450 min., unlimited verizon to verizon text, 500 out of network text, insurance, and data. my ATT bill is 100 even very month, i have over 1500 roll over minutes already 450 anytime, unlimited data and unlimited text. not to mention it sh!ts all over the blackberry with the browser, speed, and most of its capabilities. ATT isnt as bad as everyone claims. In my 2 years of having iphones, ive not broken a single one and ive had maybe a total of 3 dropped calls

96ukssob 10-06-2009 10:04 AM

depends on what your tastes are. if you are looking for something with a shitty web browser, limited apps and no touch screen go with a blackberry. if you want to have shitty cell reception and dropped calls, then go with the iPhone

Choopa Phil 10-06-2009 10:08 AM

where do all you ATT users have dropped calls? Ive been through the tristate area (NJ/NY/CT) and never have problems...
