We use Magento and then skin it with a custom design. My pricing starts at $1499 and I deal mostly with mainstream small businesses.

We did a couple for a client recently, and of course allour sites are Magento now.

most designers would need at least an inclination of what level of design you want to achieve before giving you a proper quote...

Just saying how much for a cart and design tells us absolutely nothing...

That would cover just about the paid extensions you'd need to run a somewhat solid ecommerce ship.

Magneto is great... the only minus I found about it is the performance... it's quite slow :(
