Since my new site is getting bigger , it would really be good to have number of posts at sidebar with category. Does anyone have advice how have this simple option that is available with default theme?

I believe you are looking for the 'show_count' options.

the red is a little hard on the eyes for the tag. may want to consider redoing that.
