Melting together 30gig of sony HD .mts files??

Its all separate avchd movie clips in .mts format. Totalling 30gigs.

I want to put it together to one large movie file in true HD, and edit it.

At the moment im giving it a go with pinaccle 12, but the problem is its almost impossible to load 30 gigs of separate clips into it. So im wondering if i can somehow use another program to melt the raw .mts files together to a full hd other format (avi ..?) and THEN use pinaccle to cutout parts i dont want, and edit in sound.

Im a complete noob at video-editing, so be gentle on me with the leet pro words and explanations.

most .nle editors will pull in .mts, and you just have to join them up in your timeline. Ill be on later if you need some help, heading out for a few hours now though.
